I'm a bass player and I own the AW-3. I really want to get the filtered out bubble sound like you hear in techno music but I'm not sure how to get that out of the AW-3. Besides that, I was thinking about picking up an FT-2. Any comments or suggestions for either pedal to be used on Bass?
(A note to bossarea, maybe you could make a comparison subfolder? ) |

Maybe the SYB3 or SYB5.
"turn any electric bass guitar into a dance, techno, hip-hop, funk or R&B machine"
Never used one myself, but that description seems to fit what you're looking for. |

The SYB-3 approximates something like a Moog synth, and can be quite hard to use due to it's tracking issues. That being said, once you learn to mute well enough and feed it with a strong signal - then you have a monophonic analogue synth. Not terribly exciting by itself, and quite cold. With delay it becomes much warmer, but phaser/chorus etc has very little audible effect. Now maybe if boss made an arpeggiator to go with it...
If you want to emulate a synth, I've found that a combination of fuzz/distortion, wah (or phaser) and tremolo can be very convincing.
Par l'example: the Big Muff pi renders your bass signal into a wooly mass which sounds delightful with slow sweeps of the wah - if this is then hit with a square wave tremolo it sounds very little like a bass anymore.
Now, back to the AW-3, FT-2 question: if the FT-2 sounds anything like the envelope filter modes of the SYB-3, then it may be too weak. The problem with applying techno sounds to bass is that there is often a lot more than one effect in play at once :)

I think the forum is the best place for comparisons. Sound is very subjective and a comparison will often mean nothing to anyone else than the author.
On the pedal pages I have tried to stear clear of mentioning any of my own opinions. The pages are about getting the facts out and if I wrote that the AW-3 is much better than the AW-2 it would only be my own opinion.
Regarding the FT-2, AW-3 and SYB-X... haven't tried any of them :)

One of the other bands at my band space had one of those sitting around. I tried it out last night but I was broken. I took it to work and took it apart but I couldn't find the problem. I still want to try it but at the same time I have this undying loyalty to Boss. |
