I want to boost my crunchy/distotion tone for soloing.
do i:
A) Buy a SD-1 to boost by Marshall shredmaster pedal (which will free up my OD-3 for stand alone blues tones) or
B) Buy a GE-7 and run it in my effects loop for a mid and level boost for soloing? I am a bit concerned about this pedal as i have read some reviews which say that it is a bit 'hissey' and noisey?
....do Boss make a volume pedal?
hope someone can help

Good question. I'd go with the SD-1. You can use the GE-7, but I wouldn't recommend that without modding it because it's so hissy. I especially wouldn't recommend it in the effects loop even with the mod.
Boss does make a volume pedal or two. I'm sure bossarea listed it somewhere on the home page "other" pedals. I don't know if you can get a boost with them or not. Dunlop makes (or used to make) a volume pedal w/ boost.

Thanks for replying and your advice.
I suppose for the money i could buy the SD-1 AND the DS-1 for same money, I would hope that between the OD-3 , SD-1 and the DS-1 i could find a good boosting tone?
Thanks again |

steve998 Some people run a SD-1 on almost clean into a DS-1 for that extra boost & drive.
And then I have seen people do the exact opposite, & run the DS-1 on almost clean to boost a SD-1
The SD-1 has a mid range hump in its freq. response, which will-can help you cut through the mix or on stage, when you do you solo - Hero part.
If you go the GE-7 route, set the sliders up so that they look like an Un-happy or sad face smile, start with all the sliders at zero & then just move the middle sliders, till you get the sad face, just a little boost on the middle sliders, Then add a small amount of boost on the level, remember be a bit subtle to start with, and then do a test with the GE-7 on & off
Do this at full gigging volume, as the ear perceives a mid boost when you increase the volume, if you are skeptical of this fact, try it out for yourself Start at a low volumes with your on & off test, and then increase the volume and do it again. Most people set the sliders for too much boost. Remember you can set the 800hz middle slider to zero and cut the rest a bit, so you still get the sad face.
it's the mid boost around 800hz that will give you the cut through the mix effect, that a lot of people seem to be looking for.
On the issue of GE-7's being noisy, there seems to be two separate camps, one that claims they are noisy & need modding, and, one that has no problems with noise, I seem to be in the second camp, as I have never had noise problems with my MIJ GE-7.
The noise may be associated with a batch problem, where some IC's came from different sources & had intrinsically more noise. And then again it may be an impedance issue, or it may have just been, that Venus wasn't aligned with Mars on that particular week or month.

I had a MIT GE-7, it was noisy and sucked, I did the Sniper mod, the pedal is now awesome, but I still prefer my PQ-4. As far as a boost goes, I would highly recommend the BYOC Tri-Boost. That thing is awesome, and if you set it to MOSFET mode, it should be exactly the kind of thing you are looking for, although I have noticed that it works way better with lead then rhythm, and tends to get kind of muddy when too many notes are played at the same time through it.
I just remembered that the folks at Tone-Jam.com (who do the GE-7 Sniper mod) also do a mod for the PQ-4 called the Paratrooper or something like that, I think I might have to look into getting a kit, although I really have no problems with my stock PQ-4.
On another note I noticed that both tone-jam.com and lounge lizard studios websites are down. I don't know how long they've been down. Did Kevin go out of business? Does anyone know anything about this? I know he was very backordered last I checked.
