I've been on eBay looking for a new or new new GE-7. I've seen adds where people will state that the one they are selling is a Japan model. I did a little looking on the Boss Area site. I noticed that if they were not made in Japan, they were made in Taiwan. Is there any difference in quality between the Japan and Taiwan models?

| I don't have both versions of the GE-7 but when comparing my MIJ GE-7 against my MIT GEB-7, I found that the Taiwan made pedal produced less noise. It's more than 20 years newer so I guess component quality has improved over the years. |

Thanks... Over the weekend, prior to joining the forum, I had emailed Roland to asking the same question, they didn't say much...

Hello Rick, There's really no difference as far as function. The 'Japan' version would be the older of the two. Sincerely, Roland Product Support

| What does MIT mean? I've had another guitarist tell me that the GE-7s are noisy. Said that he put it on the shelf for years and never used it until he got a mod for it. Made it nice a quiet. Now he uses every day. |

Roland will also tell you that a first-run DS-1 has the same sound as the currently produced model.
I know there are some 4558s in the GE-7 that I have (MIJ), would those have appeared in any MIT pedals? There's a lot of stock placed in the sound of those chips throughout the pedal world.. changing them SHOULD result in a different sound. |

Talking about noise, how much is noise a problem when you play guitar?
You will hear the hiss when you stop playing! Is this a problem? Each person will respond differently to this question.
I have a Jap. GE7 and a GE6. The GE6 is one of the first issue Bosspedals, it is noisier than the GE7, but does have more body, more bass, and overal sound better.
I have tried Taiwanese GE7's in shops just to see if the Taiwanese models would sound any better than the earlier Jap. vesion of the GE7. The Taiwanese pedal did have same noise as the Jap. version.
The GE6 does not get menioned much here, maybe you need to be a tonefreak to hear it, but really it is one of the best Equalizers I have heard.
To come back to your question, I would be quite happy to get a new GE7 if I was after one, the difference in sound bewteen a new one and older one will be minimal if nill.

Hi Guys
Just my 2 cents:
The GE-7, like a lot of EQ pedals, is touchy about impedance. It will be almost noiseless on some setups And noisy to intolerable on other setups.
I have an MIG GE-7 that I have no issues with on my current setup/s, But becomes a "Hisssssing Monster", when used over at my friends project studio, until I use an in line impedance matching Xformer (transformer).
If you're on a tight budget the BehringClone EQ-700 is an almost direct copy of the Boss GE-7. But uses JFET opamps, & it typically much quieter, I have one as a backup. The slider pots are not the best & move easily, but electronics wise, it works well. I sometimes use it as my second EQ, when experimenting. It was under $20au in a bulk buy of pedals, I got a few years back.
Regards Dr. Bob |

I use my GE-7 only as a pre amp for my acoustics but i've never suffered with any noise problems..like the doc said it probably depends on the setup or situation it's being used in... |

| I to have used my GE7 mostly in my chain for acoustic electric guitars. I have found no noise ever, but the same could not be said of the GE6 which is a giant hissing monster. |
