Thanks, zentropa, for all the excellent feedback, especially the detailed explanations behind the recommendations you make. I'm much more interested in the "why" of a recommendation then just the "what." You gave me exactly what I'm looking for.
quote: my #1 recommendation would be an MIJ HM-2 heavy metal. yah, it's got heavy metal in the name, but coming out in 1983 the heavy metal it's trying to copy is in the vein of a judas priest or randy rhoads sound... aka marshall cranked to 11 w/ maybe a tubescreamer in front of it.
Sounds like a great starting point. A buddy has this pedal, I'll see if I can borrow it. It doesn't look like a hard pedal to get a hold off. You recommend MIJ over MIT. Does the label color matter? [I see they come with a black label or a green label.] As far as the name, I'm not scared off by that at all. Nothing at all wrong with sounding like Priest or randy Randy Rhoads!
I'm intrigued at the thought of modding my DS-1. Perhaps when I settle on a dist. pedal I'm happy with, I'll have a go at the DS-1 for fun.

That's already on my list, RFB, but for different reasons.
Thanls again for all the great feedback everyone.
Cheers!
Oh by the way, what's it mean to say a speaker is dry?

np man. i hope my recommendations turn out to be accurate for you. after i left the music scene a lot of bands still approached me for helping me assemble their rigs on a budget. sadly, my main skill in music isn't playing, engineering, nor pitch, but it's being able to hear many different levels of timbre and memorize tone qualities of various instruments/gear.
people used to play CD's for me and tell me what they wanted for clean/dirty setups.

i don't know if color matters... i've owned 2 black MIJ and 2 MIT. the MIJ's were substantially better than the MIT's. honestly, it shouldn't be too hard to grab an MIJ in the $50 range after shipping within say, 2-3 weeks of ebay hunting, especially if you don't care about a box/manual.

was referring to the timbre. with most of my terminology describing sounds i try to avoid getting too technical and try to describe it using adjectives that make sense in a relative sense. i could go way into it with frequency contours, but that's time consuming and only a handful of people would know what it means.
for dry, here's an example of speakers in order from dry to wet. dryest celestion greenback 25 watt speakers celestion vintage 30's celestion g70's (standard 1960 cabinet speakers) JBL's jensens (e.g. '65 twin reverb reissue) wettest
i guess i use it in the same sense as people use "warm" etc. when describing tones.
an ampeg bass cabinet is "warm and dark" while a hartke or eden bass cabinet is "bright"
an OD-3 is warm, a DS-1 is bright.
mahogany and ash body guitars sound "thick" whereas maple body guitars are "bright and thin."
ceramic humbuckers are muddy while alnico ii humbuckers are warm, etc. |

btw, modding pedals is like being intimate with a woman.
the first time it's exhilarating, kind of scary, enjoyable but you are worried about messing it up badly.
the more you do it, it gets easier each time and eventually feels second nature and you get more confident.
i'm sure many of the techies on this forum would be porn star caliber when it comes to modding pedals :) |
