Heya! I'm relative new into the Boss scene but am loving it. I just got myself a BCB-60 (though its cheap plastic hinges are annoying) i can now chain up my pedals!
I've made a good order for the following 6 pedals to go in but am wondering what other guys think:
Boss DS-1 MIT Boss CE-2 MIJ Boss SD-1 MIJ Boss CS-3 MIT MXR Phase 90 (new one) Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Wah.
Regards,
Kelvin |

personally, I would place them in this order (from guitar to amp):
wah CS-3 SD-1 DS-1 phase 90 CE-2 |

| Oh and that isn't my order of pedals, just a list of them. How would you arrange them? |

I did
wah>phaser>cs3>ds1>sd1>ce2
phaser is a filter so im not 100% what to do with it....
but is feeding a dist into overdrive better than overdrive into dist? |

theres no right or wrong way, its whatever sounds good to you.
I generally put the compressor first (i dont use mine anymore though), followed by the wah, then OD into dist, phaser and chorus either way at the end.
If the wah is acting too much like a filter than a wah (too much dist after), I would put the sd-1 and ds-1 before the wah.
and BTW, a phaser isnt a filter. It is a modulation pedal. Try turning it on by itself and you will see what it does. And usually filters go near the end to filter out unwanted tones. |

The Phaser IS a filter effect so it should go right after the wah, but before the compressor. Here's how most players arrange their effects:
Filter (such as wah, phaser, envelope filter) > Compressor > Overdrive > Distortion > Modulation (flangers, chorus) > Delay Reverb
Your mileage may vary, but this is a very common way of arranging your pedals.
You didn't ask about this, but I'm going to mention it regardless: Your Cry Baby is very likely eating your highs when bypassed, so you really want to look into having it modified for true bypass. You can do this yourself if you have the basic skills with a solder iron and some googling.
Stock CryBaby's are by far the most tone degrading pedal you can add to your chain. |

| Phaser before or after the distortion is a matter of choice, I prefer pre-distorion but most people I know use it post. [pre being guitar > phaser > dist > amp] |

Phasers can sound like chorus/modulation, so many people (myself included) put them post-distortion. Also, octavers/pitchshifters/harmonisers have not been mentioned yet with regard to pedal position: I think they tend to track best if they are early in the chain, but maybe after a compressor to feed them a stronger signal. Octave almost always sounds better BEFORE an envelope filter. After a great deal of experimentation, my rig goes -
Compressor (old DOD 280) OC-2 TW-1 OD-3 CE-2 DD-20 |

Come to think of it, when people mention using a phaser before a dist. or overdrive, they use a slow one like a 90degree or a 4 stager. The comment other higher staged phasers tend to override the signal. It makes a syth-like sound if you want...
Ive'd put a phaser before my wah to drive it with intesteting effects. But found my ph-2 to stong and overpowering. You can get cool chourus/ringing after dist/od. So maybe it is the amount of stages. Since yours is a 4 stage, it could probably sound good everywhere. The ph-2 is a 270degree or a 12 stage phaser
I like using a sd-1 after a distortion to boost the signal, it also really makes the harmonics shine through.
I like your setup so far, you try any new order of effects. You've probable heard this before, but its what sounds good to you |
