I'm a first time poster and long time fan of BOSS pedals and the Bossarea website.
Here's my question. I have a Roland Cube 30 and really love the "Brit Combo" setting. I've since moved on a to a single channel 30 watt tube amp. Is there a BOSS overdrive or distortion pedal that can approximate that "Brit Combo" sound? I assume "Brit Combo" is a reference to a Vox AC30.
Thanks for any suggestions. |

Im still waiting for my cube 60 to arrive, so im not sure how it sounds, but you might want to check out the hot british from tonebone.
Theres no british distortion pedal by boss, but maybe theres some settings on a pedal that could do it. Ive never tried, so im not sure |

Hi Tele_Man, mattoqua & Guys
Remember that the New Boss Cube amps Use COSM Modeling to achieve their sounds.
So It will be a matter of tying to find a Boss pedals that approximates that tone.
The Output vales have al lot to do with getting 'That British sound" Most British amps like the Vox & Marshall's, used El84 & EL86 output valves, They typically have a brighter, Thinner more Treble-y sound.
Where the American amps Like the Fenders use 6L6 & 6V6 output valves. These have a rounder & fuller sound, with bell like qualities.
I can feel a raging debate coming one here...
Maybe an SD-1 with the treble turned up a bit more, Let me know what you guy work out.
Perhaps Bossarea, with his crop circle of Boss pedals, & British background, might have more valid ideas & comments, about which Boss pedal can emulate the "British Sound"?
Tele_Man, you failed to mention, which tube amp you are using, & what valves are used in it's output stage.... By British Combo, do you mean the Vox AC30 AC15's?

Don't think the SD-1 is a bad choice. It's got a lot of that grit sound that I atttribute to AC30s. Would also like to include the OD-3 into the discussion. It may sound a little to contemporary but I don't think it's too far off. |

| I use a Vox AC15 with a Blues Driver now, I won't be using any other distortion/overdrive pedal, if you twiddle the knobs, you can have English or U.S sounds, which sound great. |

In reference to Dr. Bob's question, I have an Electar Tube 30 with 2 12AX7 pre-amp tubes and 2 EL84 power amp tubes driving a Carvin Vintage 10 Series speaker. I kove the tone, but the overdrive tends towards more of a harsh fuzz, and there's no real second channel, just an overdrive button that pretty much sucks.
I do have a BD-1 and a DS-1. Might some combination of these with some EQ tweeks all around put me close?
Thanks for all the feedback so far. I appreciate the comments. |

try holding back on the distortion on the ds1 and push the level up instead...i used to use mine like this and you can get some good sounds this way especially with a valve(tube) amp..... you don't have to turn the distortion off altogether just try keeping it below halfway and the tone knob the same.....but i think the doc has a point about the valves...with the electar your using el 84's so your in the vox 'ballpark' if you know what i mean....i put output valve converters into a old marshall i wanted to scale down in power from el 34's to el 84's and it gives the amp a whole different vibe..the next thing i'm going to do when i have time is to pull the back off the 2x12 cab and make it semi open like the old vox cabs from years ago.....
is the carvin speaker in a seperate cab or is the amp a combo....?? |

Thanks for all the great feedback so far. Tone can be such an elusive thing; chasing it is half the fun, isn't it!?! In answer to your question Franzoni, it's a semi-open back combo.
I'll try the suggested settings with the DS-1 and fiddle with the EQ on the amp. I'll A?B it against the Cube 30 to see how it compares.
Cheers! |
