OD-3 - much fuller sounding and better quality. Sd-1's have been known to suffer from low volume output.

Yep discontinued, General "Forum consensus" is that SD-2 is one of the best out there though. I saw a few on flEa-BAY today, I think one was BIN.

i put the SD-2 into a different class than the SD-1 and OD-3.
the SD-2's rhythm channel i find rather weak compared to both and the SD-2's lead channel is way over the top in comparison.
between the SD-1 and OD-3...
the SD-1 is more versatile and has more gain potential. it will also dial back nicely into a similar warm overdrive that the OD-3 does. the OD-3 imo, is better with single coils as it doesn't really want to get very bright (it's one of the few boss pedals where i use it with the tone knob at or above 12 o'clock).
the OD-3 is more of a transparent warm OD/Boost. it retains low end but chokes out the highs a bit. it gets a driven/crunch sound but will not kick over to a high gain sound.
the SD-1 will do the OD/Boost all the way up to a mild bit of fuzz but it also has a pronounced mid boost. SD-1's also have a bleed problem that has to be addressed if you play with the drive knob beyond 9 o'clock. also, the SD-1 doesn't have nearly the potential level boost that an OD-3 has.
i used to favor the OD-3, but i've since started using an MIJ SD-1 instead.
overall, they are pretty redundant pedals so you can't justify going for both unless you just want both of em.
if you are willing to do an easy mod, the SD-1 is definitely a better value (read as: it's way cheaper).
if you play high output humbuckers and don't want to worry about a mod, the OD-3 is probably a safer choice. i like both better than a stock BD-2. |

| What kind of amp are you using? Something like a Marshall JCM800 2203 with an SD-1 (Zakk Wylde) is a proven winning combination. With something like a Fender Twin type amp, I would prefer the OD-3. |
