We've discussed this in the DS-1 Evolution thread already but now that we can decode the serial numbers I think it's time to narrow it down a bit.
The DS-1 changed its opamp from the TA7136AP to the M5223AL some time in the 90s. Best estimate so far is that it happened 1994. From the Evolution thread we have that HE93555 (April-93) was still using the old opamp. My own FQ14691 (August 2002) is using the new opamp so that gives us a 9 year interval to start narrowing down.
If you have a newer DS-1, please go to the serial number decoder ../serial/snform.asp or http://members.cox.net/praisetek and reply here with the production month/year and Opamp. |

My Service Manual for the DS-1 is the 2nd Edition (Dec. 26, 1980), so I can't shed any insight here. I got all my service manuals from Boss, but they sometimes don't tell me that there are more than one edition for a particular pedal. There clearly must be another edition that reflects the PCB change with the Op-Amp change.
Grace and peace,
Steve

| I got the same schematic as you. I'm sure the change is mentioned in the newer schematics. I have been tempted to order a schematic for the CE-5 for the same reason but it would be such a disappointment if they didn't mention when the change took place. |

That I can guarantee you is there. That is where this whole serial number decoding journey began for me. I've got both editions of the CH-1 and the CE-5. The 2nd Editions are the big fold out style ones. The change from analog to digital on the CH-1 was S/N AP1170, the change on the CE-5 is KP16600. So, I wanted to get an example of each to check 'em out, but I couldn't seem to make sense of why my ZA02539 was analog. Surely ZA would be later than KP! Not if you're a clever Boss engineer, it's not. You'll notice that the change for both pedals happened at month P1. You'll also notice on my original S/N decoding grid that month is highlighted. Coincidence? I think not.
BTW, you may also have noticed that I snagged CH-1 unit number 2539, made in the first month of the new serial number format off of ebay. Very nice. I may have to keep this one! I saw another post on this forum from someone else with a similar S/N. The early ones didn't have a pot to bias the BBD ground reference voltage. On the schematic you'll see that where R15,16, & 17 are. At some point Boss put the pot in (so much for saving a few cents per unit), so it must have caused problems in some of the units. The change is not documented in the CH-1 service manual, but the PCB is slightly different and the pot was added. Time for another "everybody check your boards" exercise?
Gotta run, I'm trying to put together a bunch of auctions to go up tomorrow of all my miscellaneous things I've been putting in a storage container for a couple of years saying, "I need to sell this on ebay someday." None of it is pedals yet (unless you consider the Fishman pre-amp I sold a pedal), but I gotta start bringing in some cash. I've spent a lot this year on ebay....
And no laughing at my stuffed animals!

Awesome info. Thanks again. We should probably start a new thread for each of those pedals so we can catalog changes and compare pedals. It's great to know when the changes took place so we know what to look for on Ebay. There's probably more pedal changes just waiting to be uncovered.
Stuffed animals? Any Llamas? |

OK, I'll take a break from formatting my G35 poster pix to reply to that! Just a Jingle Bell Snoopy and an Opus. Snoopy is my first listing with audio.
What's the deal with that Llama, anyway? A banana on a llama? Sounds like a Way Huge pedal! But we digress into yet another thread.... |
