Hi guys,

while trying to sell some of my pedals someone offered me a green russian big muff as a trade object - so here are my questions

would anybody be interested in buying one of these?
how much would you want to pay / are they worth in general?
If nobody buys it - are they any good?

cheers,
mully

The Russian Big Muffs are better than the NYC ones in my opinion. They are creamier and a bit smoother but have slightly less gain.

There are actually 3 different distinct versions and a few rare transitional models aswell. They are worth different amounts.

They are *really* easy to mod for tone and gain (simple, lots of space in the box and plenty of schematics on the web)

MKI and MKII Russians are worth about the same. These are the chunky ones from the 90's. A good example can go for USD 250 on eBay even if knobs and the battery door are missing (common - a perfect example is rare and usually sells for a lot). The transitional ones can sell for more sometimes (depending on who's looking on eBay that week), but I got mine cheaper. I guess most people don't really know what they are looking at.

MKIII is the current model and is now black, although there are a few around in green. They are a bit shorter and a lot lighter. They aren't as nice as the older ones. They fetch around USD 100? on eBay second hand.

I currently own 2 MKII's, an MKIII, a modded MKIII and a MKII/III transitional. I don't own any other fuzz pedals (I've tried a few and didn't like them). Obviously I really like Russian Big Muffs, but I use them mainly for Bass not guitar (the russian Muffs don't kill your bass frequencies)...

this website has some good pics and info about the different models if you need to find out more:

According to DiscoFreq, it's a MK II. I've heard that they suck tone, but - as natthu said - they sound better than the normal ones. If you change the switching, you have a great sounding fuzzbox. Gilmour did use the Russian versions, along with other ones.

That is a nice example (it's an early MKII). It would probably attract the upper end of the price scale on eBay. These things are however, very expensive for what you get (don't get me wrong - I love them and wouldn't give mine up), unless you're a fan or think you can on-sell for profit, i wouldn't bother. You've probably made the right decision Mully.

Yeah, only the very late MKII's had TB switching (I have one of these - they are better for your tone). This one pictured is the lumbering old Soviet style switch, which looks pretty ugly when you mod for TB (the switch hole is way too big for a nornal 3PDT switch).

I heard Gilmour used a "Civil War" Muff (really old VERY rare and extremely expensive if one actually pops up on eBay), I think these were the precursor to the Russian Big Muffs (which only appeared in the 90's?).

In any case you'll find people on the net claiming that the Civil War Muff is the difinitive Muff. You'll also find people on the net claiming that aliens are trying to control their minds. Maybe they're both right... I wouldn't know, I've never used - or even seen - a civil war Muff or met an alien.
