Hey Forum, I was wondering and i'm pretty sure of the answer which is (yes) but has the chip in the sd-1 changed through out the years? And if so are there any tone/noise differences between them? Rock On- Neaves |

As far as I know the SD-1 has always used the 4558 chip. There's been different sub versions like D or DD and I'm sure someone is able to hear the difference between these, but I'm not. |

Hi Neaves
In the small collection of MIJ & MIT SD-1's The opamps are the same.
That might have changed, in the most current MIT 2008-2009 revision SD-1's.

Cool Guys!:) I have been listening to all this MIJ vs MIT with the sd-1 for a long while now and am wondering what makes them different so i figured i would start with the op amp. Do MIJ sd-1's have different component values than the MIT's? I have heard that the MIJ's are warmer and less harsh than MIT's. What do you think? Rock On- Josh |

i have an mit sd-1 that came with a jrc 4558DD. i put a chip adapter and tried a 4558D and IMO the DD has "thicker" and more gain so thats what i put back in the pedal since that was what i was looking for.

Is this the same chip as the JRC4558 chip found in vintange TS9 and TS808 Tubescreamers? |

| Yes it is. It's one of the most common opamps to find in music gear. |

Thanks! If it's common then, I wonder why it's such a big deal to Tubescreamer lovers that their TS9 or TS808 have that chip? You almost always see that mentioned on eBay auctions and even the Ibanez website makes a big deal of the reissue TS808 having it. The current production TS9 doesn't. It makes me like my SD-1 even more now! |

the majority of the tone difference in older SD-1's is often due to component aging, however, i do find a difference in the silver screw and transition label SD-1's vs. later SD-1's and differences in the ACA SD-1's vs. PSA SD-1's.
the flavor of the gain remains relatively constant. the overall fullness seems to be the bigger change.
as for op amps, the JRC4558DD is much smoother and has more gain than a 4558D. the 4558D is a lot more "bitey," which can be a good or bad thing depending upon what you want out of it. i find the 4558DD is better as a dirt box whereas the 4558D works better as a booster.
the biggest tone changes happen with swapping out clipping diodes. |

I always yank out the 4558s...just do not like them very much, always replace them with LF353 for dual op amp stuff.
