Well, once again I don't know if my spelling is correct... perhaps "what is Boss the best at?" is a better sentence...don't know...
Anyway, the subject is : "what effect this brand has made the best?" or: "if you only choose a type of effect to present Boss to an alien from Mars, what type of effect would you choose?"
From my point of view, it's.....................................................CHORUS !! |

| I agree. The CE-1 was the first big Boss product and it sort of defined the company. For years the CE-2 was the industry standard compact stomper. Chorus pedals may not be as popular as they were back in the eighties but to me they're the most important Boss product. |

Digital delays. The DD-6 is probably the only Boss pedal I would really lack.
Then , the outsiders :
*I didn't find yet a better octaver than the OC-3.
*The choruses are great, even if I must say i prefer the Ibanez (Maxon) double ones, like the BC-9 or the DCL.
*The PQ-4 and LS-2 are probably the two pedals everyone should own. It's not really a Boss specific product, any brand could do the same, but the fact is, nobody does. Thoses functions, in the Boss "tank" enclosure, are just worthless. |

The best product: chorus But quality is something Boss is known for and I can certainly agree on that, Ive had around 200 Boss products during my lifetime and just a very few of them has been not working, and nearly every time it has been the battery connector.

TU-2 should be the industry standard.
SD-1 and Ds-1 are great, they may need a little tweaking, but for the $$ they can't be touched.
Modulation too many good ones to list....
OC-2 is great. |

Well, I think Boss isn't good at equalizers, I try the GE7 once and I think it's a tone-killer... I also don't like their auto-wahs and metal distortions...
But that's all! |

| I don't agree with Nibla about the equalizers: i own a PQ-3B and i have owned a GE-7B and they both (especially the PQ-3B) made a enormous impact on my sound. That's not to say that other companies don't make good equalizers though.... |

Reliability, distribution and conformity of design.
But in terms of effect type...
Chorus: Roland invented that right? The CE-1 is the grail of chorus - the benchmark of the effect. The CE-2 is gaining greater recognition all the time. The VB-2 is widely lauded as the best standalone vibrato created. Current models aren't exactly good though. Compact digital delay: The DD-2 was the first and the DD-3 has been the industry standard for years Compact analogue delay: They must be good as you can rarely find one for under AUD$300 anymore.
Honorable mention: IC Overdrive: AFAIK the OD-1 was the first, in 1977 (even though Maxon are attempting to claim they invented the TS in 1974 on their website). Status has largely been eclipsed by the TS, but they're gaining notoriety. The SD-1 is something of an industry standard. IC Distortion The DS-1 has been an industry standard since its release, but I wonder whether that isn't more due to its ubiquity, price and reliability than tone. |

In other sense, yes, I think Boss is the coca cola of effects pedals also. My hometown is small and somehow isolated from the rest of the country. So, new products (not only music gears) arrive here with certain delay and the specialized devices should be ordered in advance. Nevertheless, I remember those Boss pedals at the local store when I started to play guitar many years ago.
Well, I don't like coca cola very much, but I do like Boss pedals. |
