When in your opinion is something nos?
I got a few pedals wich were sold to me as nos they all look new and unused but only a pq-4 came with all the leaflets, plastic and stickers, so in my opinion that is nos. But how to describe an unused pedal with manual and box only ? |

| i say NOS is DEAD mint in box. otherwise its just excellent condition or gets the "used once" treatment. |

i think that NOS is the box might not ever have even been opened. It should have everything, including the plastic wrap on the pedal.
If not, i think it should be labeled "never used" |

The term depends a lot upon the seller, and what the buyer expects. I agree with the 2 posts above regarding what NOS should ideally mean, but the term is used much more loosely on Ebay for instance.
Ideally NOS means 'as it left the factory' and unused, but often items may have sat in a music store display case for years picking up dust & the occasional scratch - it could still be termed NOS even though it may not be mint condition. And then another pedal that has been used could be in better external condition than the NOS one! so it's hard to say.
I'd be happy with the condition of the pedal itself, but as you say other collectors may demand a perfect box and 'accessories' too. It's a relative term I think.
Edit> I think what I'm trying to say is that NOS often means different things to different people, and unless you can inspect the pedal in person then you're always taking a chance regarding whether the pedal will live up to your own expectations of what NOS means. Unless an item's factory sealed then you can never really know until you receive it. |

| To my mind, NOS is a pedal that is not being manufactured anymore (more probably for several years) and is being sold new by a store. The pedal itself must be mint, all the internal papers must be present, but the box can be bruised or marked, having been shifted around in storage. A private seller can't sell a NOS pedal, as they're not in the habit of stocking new pedals. As soon as the pedal changes hands from retailer to consumer, it becomes used. They can sell an "as new or mint" pedal sure, but NOS is limited to retailers. I'm currently selling my FZ-3 which has the distributor list, manual and even the plastic baggie the pedal comes in - I've cheated in that I said I bought it NOS, but personally I'm describing it as "practically new". |
