Looks like a good old OD-1 to me. Serial 8200 resolves to May 1979 and the markings on the transistors support that.

I suspect the marking on the PCB, 052 2(0?)18 actually reads 052 281B. 052-281A should only be on pedals with serial number 6400-6600 if the info I've received so far is correct.

hello bossarea,

yes, i got the magnifying glass and had a close look at that number and you are correct. the 8 is actually a 'B', and the 0 is infact aN 8. the solder just clumped into a bit of a blob on the 8.
even i used this datecode theory before posting, and i came up with feb-march 79.
well done and thanks

svengali.

I was just wondering if anyone knows around what Serial Number they changed the logo on the DF-2 from Super Distortion & Feedbacker to Super Feedbacker & Distortion. I was just wondering because I entered the serial number to my DF-2 Super Feedbacker & Distortion logo (SN# 544000) into the serial number decoder, and the decoder says that my pedal was produced in May of 1985, which is only about 8 months into production of the DF-2. I'm just wondering if I have one of the first run of pedals with the changed logo, because it would just be an interesting detail to mention with my pedal (I'm not looking to sell it, just wondering if I had something interesting for conversation purposes). Any help would be appreciated.

If this was previously discussed, I apologize as I am new to the forum. Thanks.

Comparing DF-2 serials is something we haven't done yet so there isn't any information about when the name changed.
My own DF-2 is also labelled Super Feedbacker and has serial number 529300 so that leaves a maximum of 6 month production span for the Super Distortions.

We will need as few more serial numbers to form a theory here so if you got one, please post yours here.

My "Super Distortion" has a 473300 S/N, month 2 of production if all the dates are accurate.

Steve

Interesting, based on the numbers that have been contributed so far, its looking like the change happened somewhere between 480100 and 529300, hopefully we'll get more to compare with and get it narrowed down even closer.

I don’t know whether this helps or not, but I have what looks like a 1980’s Boss TU-12 Chromatic Tuner. It’s MIJ and its serial number is 350515. The decoder dates it to October 1983, which seems quite likely to me.

Btw, bossarea, do you expect this decoder to work for other Roland/Boss products as well? I have a Roland amp that I’ve never been able to date. I bought it NOS in 2000, and I always thought it was a 1999 or may be a 98. I just entered the serial#, ZJ33427, into the decoder and it dates it to December 1996. Would you expect that to be fairly accurate or not? Thanks heaps!

The decoder should work for most products. I don't know what the serial numbers looked like on the earlierst Boss products so there may be some anomalies there. All units carrying the 6 digit sticker and the 2 letter, 5 digit serial should be reliably decoded.

Any Roland or Boss product with the 2 letter, 5 number serial number will be accurately decoded by the decoder, including Roland amps & guitar synths. The early Boss products like the CE-1 have a different 6 number serial number that we haven't even discussed yet.

Steve

Hi if this is useful to you I have a BOSS DS-1 serial number ink printed 9400. According to your decoder that's May 1980.
thanx
