Hi I recently bought a 1988 BOSS DS-2 which has a silver label and is made in Japan. When I first started playing the guitar, almost 20 years ago, I bought my first electric guitar at a garage sale, it came with a small peavey amp and a Boss DS-2 all in perfect conditions. I had used this pedal for around 10 years( therefore I had learnt off by heart what sounds it would give me) and then stupidly sold it to a friend. I was more into using rack effects and mutli-effects and digital stuff, till around 2 years ago I went and bought a MIT Boss DS-2. At first I thought that my ears were so used to hearing digital effects that the MIT DS-2 seemed like an effect that I had never used before, right untill a couple of weeks ago when on ebay I found a guy who sold me the MIJ version. As soon as it arrived I put it to the test and gave it a direct comparison with the MIT version. The 2 pedals look almost exactly the same ( the MIT version seems slightly yellower) but you can clearly see that the 2 pedals are made of completely different metals. I tried both of them out for hours, but the difference was noticed immediately. Apart from the warmer more pleasent smoother distortion that the MIJ version gives, in mode I, the oscilations of the 2 distorion pedals are very different- meaning they might have the same name on them but they absolutely 2 extremely different distortions. Turning the 3 knobs to the centre position on the MIT version gives almost the same volume output as having the volume knob almost 1/4 up on the MIJ version (in mode 1). In mode II the differences are even more clear, the MIT is absolutely horrible giving a cold nasal annoying frequency distorion, where as the MIJ version gives you that turbo effect that any guitarist would expect ( if Kurt Cobain ever did use the DS-2 pedal it was surely the MIJ version on Turbo mode). I have read on your boss pedal pages that the BOSS DS-2 was made only in Taiwan, and I have contacted various collectors and experts, but none of them even knew the existance of a MIJ DS-2. How much would this pedal be worth? I also have a metal screw DS-1(black label MIJ) with serial number 9xxx printed on the inside, does anyone know what year this would be, and its actual value. Last but not least I have a 1984 DF-2 SUPER DISTORTION AND FEEDBACKER (MIJ BLACK LABEL)and was wondering how much it would be worth? thanx to all Saverio |

| First off, welcome to the forum. That is a rather interesting story about your DS-2, and was wondering about the serial numbers, as I am sure others here will be too. Also, in regards to your year question, there is a Serial Number Decoder on this forum, I believe a link is in the Forum Announcement-FAQ portion of the forum. Hope that helps... |

Check out the prices on Ebay, that is a good way to get a close value of the pedals. Yes there were DS-2's that are MIJ, but not very many. They are only worth $20 more in most cases than the MIT.

| There are MIJ DS-2s in existence (as you already know). The web site is out of date and I haven't gotten round to fixing it yet. I'm unsure whether there's actually any component differences between the MIJ and MIT pedals or if the sound difference comes from aging and component tolerances alone. |
