Hi,

great I found this thread! Great I found the link to the premierguitar site!

I have the guts of a DS-1 together with two other pedals in rack housing. A few years ago, somebody else modded the DS-1 for me with one LED and one 1N4148 as D4 and D5. I didn't like the characteristics of the LED, so I wanted a change. What I tried was two 1N4148, a 1N4148 and a 1N4001, just on 1N4148 and the other one blank and then what I found over there:

D4 1N4148 Connected in Series to another 1N4148
D5 1N4001 Connected in Series to another 1N4001

That's what I have now switchable with the "one 1N4148 and one 1N4001" option. I called it "diode stacking". With the stacking mode on it's a lot louder but a bit less distortion - but I like the sound much better than with LED!

Thanks and all the best,

silverface.

The green LED has a higher typical forward voltageof ~ 2.2V compared to the red LED which is ~ 1.7 V.

Here is a link with some details about LEDs:

But electrical data is one thing, sound perception another.

Sometimes with mods, there is also the phychoacoustic side and the DIY "feeling good" factor. It caught me several times for sure.
