Hi there
. . . . this is just a quick question for those how remeber the mig 90's stompboxes. Can any one remember the pedal that Boss released i the (i think) mid-90's, called the Grunge - after the Seattle hype with the music genre of the same name ? I would like to know if any one owns one - i hope so - 'cause i'd like to know what iit sounds like, and settle a long ongoing argument with friends that says there are no such pedal.
Thank you all Later |

XT-2 : Boss Guitar Effects Guide Book vol.14 (1999):
The XT-2 provides a cutting-edge, '90s distortion sound that can sing as well as grind. The PUNCH control adds a mid range edge, while the unique CONTOUR control cuts highs or boosts highs and lows. The XT-2 is a versatile pedal that lets you get any sound from thrash metal to grunge to hard rock.

| The "Grunge" pedal was made by DOD in the '90s then reissued by digitech a couple of years ago, you can still buy them new for about $40-50. Don't know what they sound like but the Boss XT-2 was Boss's attempt at the same sort of thing (down to the strange names for the controls). Some people like the XT-2 but most will tell you it's the worst sounding Boss pedal around!! |

| DOD also made the Buzz Box shortly after the introduction of the Grunge, and the Buzz Box is supposedly based of the MXR Blue Box, but I've never played a Blue Box to know, but the Buzz Box was piece of garbage, and its a shame Buzz from the Melvins was associated with that pedal, though he probably made a good paycheck off of it. |

Yeah I'd be willing to bet you're talking about the DOD one, that is currently still in production by Digitech. For what it's worth DOD and Digitech are part of the same company, Harman International. Who also makes Harmon/Kardon car stereos. And if we are talking about the DOD one this was actually the first pedal I ever bought. I had just picked up my first electric guitar and amp, and didn't realize what "Footswitch" meant on the amp at the time, so I desparately craved something to get some distortion, without having to bend over and push a button on the amp. I picked up the grunge distortion because it seemed to cut through a lot more than the DS-1, which was the other distortion in my price range. The DS-1 also didn't get nearly as heavy or harsh as I wanted it to be. So I picked the DOD Grunge pedal, and went on to use it for my 2nd band (in my first I played bass). Well being that this band had 2 guitarists, and the other guitarist was using his built-in distortion on his Crate Amp(this is back when they were absolute crap, they still are but the new ones sound a little better) Anyway our sounds did not blend at all, it sounded like we were playing 2 different songs at the same time, and my little grunge pedal would always cut through. Nirvana was one of my biggest influences at the time, but later on I would find out he used a DS-1! Anyway I got a DS-1 later that year because it was still affordable (as it still is). Man did I hate that thing, I used it on like 1 song that was much slower and more mellow than all of our others. So it worked ok, but in general it left the world to be desired. But oh well, that band would break-up not too long later after my bassists girlfriend was cheating on him with me, and we went our own separate high school ways. Then I went off to college for my 3rd band where it was all about the songwriting, and often times I played my acoustic/electric guitar. And if I was ever using an effect besides my amps overdrive, it was a delay pedal.
Anyway that went on for way too long and I got way sidetracked remeniscing. Thanks to any of you that bothered reading all of it, of course I remember that pedal. |

It's still around, it's been just sitting around doing nothing for years. I thought about modding it, but talked myself out of it cause then I would have to buy another one. I have an MIJ one, that sounds a little better, but still its just not my kinda sound.
I actually picked up a 2nd MIT one that I plan to mod, that I got for $12 brand new, which I totally forgot about until now.
looks like its gonna have to become a synth fuzz now. |

| Man so many XT-2 haters...lol...I love mine...But I am using it in an unconventional way so oh well...But on a normal setting it is very harsh and nasty sounding...Maybe Boss was implying that grunge was supposed to sound terrible with the XT-2...Who knows... |

99.9% sure there is no Boss grunge...might have been a clone that said Grunge maybe? i think the XT-2 is the one hailed as a "grunge" type distortion, although, grunge is the last thing id call it.. (personally of course) |

I recently did some spring cleaning, and chucked some old pamflets/brochures and what not away, and one of them was a mid-90's Boss pamflet, and i could swore that it said GRUNGE on the pedal itself.
. . . or maybe not ?

You chucked it away
I'm always looking for catalogues and brochures. In the 'other products' section there's lots of black'n'white pics because I don't have that many brochures. |
