| Was curious if anyone knew of any freebie/published mods for the Metal Zone. i just stepped a friend through his first pedal mod and he's "addicted" to it now and wants to mod out everything he owns. his next pedal to do is an MT-2. |

Thanks guys :) I did the monte alums mod to my mt-2 and didn't like it much. He replaces the clipping diodes with red leds and does a few of the the keely mods but not all. The Burr Brown opamp monte uses OPA2134PA is no big deal either.. This week I'm going back in . I'm planning on putting back the honky mids and just concentrate on getting more low end out of the pedal maybe try and widing the q of the midrange. I've already put the stock clippers back in. I'm not a big fan of led's and 1n34's are for mxr dist+'s YMMV |

i put the boogie mod in today.
i like it better than stock but still isn't like "omg this is the best thing since toilet paper" like i'm hoping to find from a mod.
i probably shoulda tried it w/ the LED + 1n4148 before i popped the 1n4001 in there.
i'm waiting on more caps (that i ordered like 4 weeks ago...) to arrive so i can finish up w/ the clarity mods.

Mods are funny things... They can be so different sounding depending on amps and guitars used. My stock mt-2 sounds great through a dark amp but through a honky combo the mids are way too sharp. I try to put in line mill sockets in place of the components I want to replace. That way I don't have to unsolder then resolder the stock or other value components if you want to change them. It makes the modding process a lot easier.. I put back most of the component original values and now I'm concentrating on getting a little more bass and a wider mid Q.. So the mid sifter and the .1uf cap in the bass eq are in now. I put a switch in to toggle between the stock diodes and my newest creation... 1n4401's with one side in series with a germ diode...

You can get them at Mouser or probably Maplin? in Europe.
Also a cap kit from Small Bear or Futurlec is handy ;)

i've been meaning to grab some of those sockets ever since i found out how difficult it is to fit the legs from 1n4001's through a lot of the holes.
i think it'll be a little while until my next small bear order. i have a few places i order from but i try to buy most of my stuff locally and support the 4 stores left here that still sell this stuff (1 is like 2 blocks from my gf's apartment and 1 is like 1 mile from work).
1 is a surplus shop that has a mix & match of stuff, often mis-marked but when they have it, it's usually cheap and they have fairly good hours (10-8pm). right now that's where i get my .047uf mylar caps @$0.10 ea. 100uf electrolytics @$0.15 ea. and 220pf silver mica @$0.35 ea. and i can buy as few/many as i want.
there's a pro audio store (where all the recording studios buy their stuff) that has a good array of this stuff as well and gives quantity discounts. 3mm red LED's are $0.22 or $0.19 if i buy 10+ (yellow or green are $0.03 more), resistors are $0.10 ea. in 20 packs (or $0.12 ea) diodes @$0.10 to $0.21 ea. and they have most of the electrolytic and ceramic caps i need @$0.10 ea. they have a poor selection of mylar/poly caps though.
after that i order a lot of stuff from a surplus store that i used to buy old RAM and used SCSI cables when i lived in portland. they have the best price i have found on good quality 1uf mylar caps ($0.25 ea.) and cheap 8-pin sockets ($0.25 ea.) as well as decent prices on anything they have (but they don't always have it...) they do have J201 transistors for the SD-1 bleed fix though for $0.25 ea. the nicest thing about this place is that if they have it in stock it ships within 1 day and they charge actual shipping (or at least close to it). e.g. 200 resistors/caps/transitors/diodes = ~$2 shipping. the downside is that if they don't have it in stock, it may take a week for a phone call to ask if they should ship your order or hold it until more arrive.
beyond that i split orders between digikey and small bear. if i need JRC4558D's, germanium stuff, or a load of silver mica caps i go through small bear. if i need a lot of caps and i need em quick i go through digikey (they are located in the same state as me).
my mouser catalog got ruined in a flood recently... haven't ordered from them before.

I wonder if digikey has those sockets? I bought mine from mouser a while ago. Mouser is pretty good. They can ship USPS for small orders. The only problem I had once was I had a backorder and they charged me to separate ship it. The previous time they didn't charge me. There online ordering is a little simpler than digikey. I've ordered from digikey a few time myself, it's just hard to find something if you don't know exactly what it's called.. I'll have to try my local pro audio shop for parts.. I've bought a lot of cabinet hardware from him... The only other electronics place near me is Rat Shack, you know it's not much of a parts place anymore...
I tried out my changes last night at rehearsal and It sounds much better. Way huge midrange and Marshall crunch out of my combo amp. I'm getting too old to shelp out my stack anymore... I put back c24 + c34 and changed c09 to .1uf and c36 to .1 uf also. The original mod that I did was the monte alums mod also the original ic is back.
Hope you have good luck with yours :) |

digikey doesn't have the sockets but they are located in my state so if i order on a tuesday, they're here wednesday, and shipping was like $2.21 but i had to clear a $25 minimum order.

Just did the Diezner mod on my second MT-2, plus replaced all the 1F caps with polyester and the 10F caps with tantalums.
Interesting result... opened it up a lot. Not sure if it's an "improvement", rather it is simply "different" and just as good (I always liked the stock MT-2 anyway). |

The Diezner mod isn't going to stick. I think if was was more into Metal music it would suit better. I think I'll be taking a few of the mod components out - putting the modded diodes back to original, plus putting some (not all) of the mids back.

Just fiddled with this mod some more. Ended up reinstalling C35 and C25. Now it sounds good to my ear...
Total mod list: - C34 .027uf to .047uf - C42 .047uf to .1 uf - D3 1n4148 to LED - D4 1n4148 to 1n4007 - C36 .022uf to .1 uf - all 1F caps changed to metallised polyester - all 10F caps changed to tantalum
I quite like it. It's opened up, better EQ, and distortion a little more "controlled" than the stock MT-2.
