I'm thinking about getting myself a looper, just for practice at home. Now, there's the RC-2 and for not much more money the RC-20XL. Which one should I get and why do you think so? I'm pretty certain I wont be using it at rehearsal or for gigs, so size matters not (Yoda quote :P)

I have had the RC-2 for a while, and to be honest it's ended up in the collection in the cupboard, not on the floor where i would use it.

I managed to pick up a good deal on an RC20XL on the weekend, and that's the one that will sit on the board

Simple reason - because it's bigger, the controls are MUCH easier to use, and the second pedal is built in. I think it doesn't have the built-in drum track though? Anyway, it's early days yet, but it's proving to be pretty useful.

well spec wise i think the RC-2 and RC-20XL are the same besides the size ofcourse.

A RC-20XL is easier to use due to the extra footswitch, but if you supply your RC-2 with a FS-6 (dual footswitch) then the RC-2 will have more sitches than the RC-20XL. I think that the RC-2 with FS-6 is very easy to use and obviously you save money too.

I got a looper for the same home use reason. I bought a rc20xl because it looks easyer to use and I actually found one cheaper than I could buy a rc2 for, I'm still anxiously waiting for it to arrive, ill let you know what I think of it

I went all out and bought the RC-50. I use it live when playing shows for some intro tracks to songs.

It was also the most expensive pedal I own and as such, doesn't stay on the board. My bandmates know to baby it and treat it very nicely, lol.

RC20XL, period! Much easier to handle and it has reverse playback, great for soundscapes.

I have the RC-2, which I like. It doesn't have the reverse playback option (as Goran already said), but I don't need that option. It does have built-in drum tracks (too bad that thera no odd time signatures). Add the FS-6 and you can switch between loops.

So does the RC20XL have drum loops/tracks? Some people say yes some people say no, I've seen the clip on the boss website and the guy has drum loops on his? I'm confused.

Yep, I'm just listening to my RC20XL go "kick-bell-bell-bell, kick-bell-bell-bell..."

It's called the "guide" - you can select variations of the percussion. It's pretty basic, but it is defintely there

From the manual:
A guide tone will sound while you are playing or recording a phrase.

The volume of the guide tone can be adjusted with the GUIDE knob.
If you do not wish to hear the guide tone, turn the GUIDE knob to the OFF position.
If you wish to change the sound of the guide tone, hold down the SHIFT (EXIT) button
and press the GUIDE SELECT (TAP TEMPO) button several times.
Each time you press the GUIDE SELECT (TAP TEMPO) button, the guide tone will
change (eight types).

I have had both the RC20XL and the RC-2; I kept the RC-2 and added a FS-5U to make start/stop and switching easier. ( i also have the FS6 double footswitch).
The RC-2 does NOT have reverse mode, but DOES have 44 Guide Tones (drum patterns) I recall that the RC20 only has 5 guide tones in it.
I kept the RC-2 because it was small. I run it at the very very end of my effects loop. I can do a clean patch, record it, and switch my preamp channel and play leads on top of clean rhythms. I can add any effects to my overdriven sound, and it doesn't affect the RC-2S recorded patch and of course, with this layout, the RC-2s out put can use all the effects when recording is done, but is not double effected on playback (I am jibberjammering because i'm falling asleep)

Its very easy to get a 3 or 4 piece band sound using the RC-2. A harmonist or OC-2 will give you enough of a baseline, too.

I lot of peeps bitch that there is no memory card option for these pedals, and I would agree that, with how cheap 4gb and up USB drives are, it would have been very handy to have had a USB port on these - it is impossible to 'back-up' digitally any of your samples, you only can record them to an external device from our guitar amp outputs etc. You can quickly see that, with 8 tracks available, you can't really come up with 2 45 minute sets and rely on this as a back-up band as you could with sequencers and midi. U only got 16 minutes here! memory cards, however, would allow you to say put 8 tracks per card, then you would only be limited by the number of memory cards you wanted to buy x8 each, to match with the 8 track dial.

Other brand devices like the "jam station" and one by zoom have USB and memory card slots but this I remember when researching this two months ago.

BTW sound quality between RC20Xl and RC02 NO DIFF.

RC20XL by intuition is much easier to use than the RC-2.

It seems strange that the RC-2 has drum loops when the RC-20XL doesn't.
