Has anyone tried these pickups, or heard anything about them? I have a project guitar that I want to install mini-humbuckers into and it's these or Seymour Duncan. These are way less expensive.

I have tried a couple of GFS humbuckers, PAF-clones, and they are very good. The price is very OK, too. But I have also tried Tonerider PAF-clones and they were even better, the price about the same. I have read on other forums that the single coils also are really good. So from my little experience I would go for the Toneriders.

| I have heard nothing but good things from many people on a variety of forums about GFS pickups. I have ordered other items, not PUs, a couple of times from GuitarFetish and they are good. |

Hi Goran I checked the Tonerider site, but they don't seem to have mini humbuckers. Because of the shape of the guitar only mini humbuckers will fit. |

word i've gotten on GFS...
they're as good as any non-snob boutique pickups (duncan, dimarzio, etc.)
snob boutique pickups = lollar, fralin, rio grande, duncan custom shop, barden, kinman, lawrence, armstrong, etc.
one thing w/ GFS vs. tonerider is that it's easier to get GFS in single pickups as you mostly find toneriders in sets.

I ordered a set of the minibirds, a archtop roller bridge and two push-pull switch pots last week and I am expecting delivery soon. I choose the least expensive shipping option and with the border to cross it might take a while. They did sent me an e-mail saying that they were shipped the next day. I will post the outcome. |

I received the minibirds, the archtop roller bridge, two push-pull switch pots and two Sprauge .22uf tone caps about a week ago. The stuff all looks good, actually real good for the price. The pickups came with mounting rings, springs, adjustment screws and good clear instructions. The adjustment screws are small in diameter, but they are mini humbuckers so I guess mini screws too. The roller bridge is excellent and the rosewood base matches the contour of the body perfectly. Now the Bigsby works like it should. I knew the mounting rings wouldn't fit the guitar so I am having some custom ones made by Fretter Guitars in Port Kells. He is going to do the whole job for me. All new wiring, new pots, new switch, new jack, the mini humbuckers with coil taps in the push pull volume controls and a complete set-up. I can hardly wait, but wait I shall, as Ed at Fretter is a very good luthier and it takes a while for one to make it to the head of the queue. |

| I ordered a Fat Mini from them last week to put in the neck of a Telecaster that I am trying to make like a Vintage Hot Rod '52 Tele, but without the $1600+ price tag. Its due to arrive Tuesday, and I'll probably get to modding it later in the week/weekend....I'll let you know how the Fat Mini is... |

Here's the GFS Fat Mini in the neck position of my SX STL50 Butterscotch Blonde Tele...
It was my first PU swap. A bit more difficult than I thought it would be. I thought that getting the screws onto the pickup and through the pickguard while trying to hold down the springs and position the screws right with one hand, then trying to use my other hand to turn the screws was difficult...that is until I went to put the pickup and pickguard into the guitar...The SX Tele had the right sized route, as far as length and width, for a humbucker (or perhaps P90), but the depth was not adequate for the PU screws and the legs/lugs the screws mount into...If I had a router, no big deal...However, no router. So I had to get a little medival on it...I used the biggest drill bit I had (3/4") to to carefully make a series of holes about 1/8-1/4" deep on each side of the PU route to make room for the pickup screws and "bracket". I was able to do this successfully, then all that was left was soldering 3 wires on the new PU, and re-soldering the bridge PU connection from the factory that looked a bit suspiscious...voila:
Sounds really good...in fact, damn good. Just the right mix of p90 and humbucker, just like the description on GuitarFetish...
Pedals4PV, if the Mini-humbuckers you got from GF are anything like the Fat Mini I got from them, you should be very pleased with them. Its too bad you have to wait to hear them, but then again, your guitar might look a bit better under the pickguard than mine does after I had to do some routing work with a drill |

That's a cool looking tele Jack I am glad to hear the pup's sound good. My luthier guy has had some family issues, of late and that is why my guitar is taking so long. I hope it finally happens next week, but I can wait, I still have a guitar or two at home and I have a few pedals to fool around with while I am waiting. |

Hi Jack & Guys
That looks pretty good. Does it sound much different, to your other Fat Tele's that are fitted with Squire Humbuckers?
I have wanted a Fat Tele for a long time, in fact I did have new one for a weekend, not too many years back, but it had some serious intonation problems, so I returned it.
I do recall how sweet it sounded, it was one of those guitars that just needed an Amp & a Lead.
And I'm relectant to do this to my 52RI
Jack, 2 weeks ago, I had Blondie the 52RI, setup by my Guitar Tech You can't imagine the difference it has made. I might even PM you later.
Regards Dr. Bob

I like the mini humbucker as it sort of has its own sound to me. Its kind of like a P90 and a humbucker had a baby. Its not as nasally sounding as the Squier neck HB, but still sounds pretty righteous. Glad to hear you got your '52 going. Perhaps you need to look into the new Classic Vibes Squier Tele to get some routing done and a mini HB in the neck.... |

For some reason, I am not really jonesing for the the Classic Vibes Tele...I mean I hear great things about them all over the net, but as much as I love Squier, I have a hard time coming to terms with the $299-range price tag when most Squiers are around $200 and Fender Standards are around $399...Maybe if the price tag drops a bit, but then its got vintage-style tuners which I don't think I am a fan of, but I am not willing to spend $300 to find out. Plus I really need to stop buying guitars... |
