I finally got a new speaker for my Classic 30. What a difference! I owe some credit to Laurie for the way it all turned out. In his post of Classic 30 mods he mentioned that Dong & Mcwad had some Celestions for a good price so I went to see them a month ago. They didn't have any of the seventy 80's in 16 ohm so I asked the sales clerk what else he had in 16 ohm. He got up on the top shelf and brought down a G 12 Century Vintage. I knew it was out of my price range, but I wanted to feel the weight of it as it has the neodymium magnet and is very light. I noticed that it was priced low at only $120 Canadian and mentioned it to him, but he said it must be the right price so I bought it. I brought it home and proceeded to dismantle my amp. After I was done I opened the box to get my nice new speaker. To my horror there was a 4 ohm, plastic frame no name speaker in the box instead of my Celestion. I tore back to the store and asked WTF? It seems that a speaker was shipped to the service department in a used Celestion box with the wrong price on it and it got lost because someone had thought it was new and put it on display for sale. They came good for the speaker and honoured the original price, so I saved about a hundred bucks. I'm sure somebody caught hell but that's not my problem. It took a month to the day for it to finally come and I have had to use my old solidstate amp the whole time but it was well worth the wait. It sounds terrific in my Classic 30. I haven't played it that much yet but the harshness is gone and I don't have that buzz in the treble anymore. I put the amp back the same as it was with the GT Mullard 5751 reissue in V1 and the 12ax7 Russian in V2 except that I put the Ruby tube back in V3 instead of the chinese. The G12 Century make the amp quite light to carry it's now about the same weight as the cab with the Vintage 30. I bet you would notice a big difference in weight with these in a 412 cab. |
