So after a long absence I'm back on the forum. Had some wrist and tendon problems but after several weeks R&R (and a holiday!) I'm back in the guitar habit. I am selling off some gear (pedals, guitars) to friends etc in order to finance a few better purchases since (especially with my recent lack of guitar playing) I don't use a lot of my gear enough. However, that's not to say I'm not interested in a few bargains. I managed to pick up a Laney Linebacker bass amp for 20 pounds and it sounds great...with my guitar (through a sub octave pedal!). Does anyone know anything about this amp? It's a very early 30 watt model. Additionally, what with me selling some gear, I'm in the market for my first bass. Can anyone recommend anything? I've always liked the look of Fender P-basses, are there any particular models that stand out? I'm really looking forward to getting back into playing more regularly and I think a new instrument will be a great boost to my playing.

If you can stretch this far, these are great instruments:

Linebackers are made in the 80's. If you want more information, you might want to check out www.laney-posse.co.uk.

This is a Laney catalog which features some Linebackers. http://laney-posse.co.uk/brochures/AOR_Range.pdf

Folder with only bass linebackers

These linebacker amps, guitar and bass versions were the de rigueur in all the rehearsal studios in dublin back in the 80's and 90's..if they survived that they must be alright..........

Hi jaymzHal

Nice to see you back.
And it's good to hear you're getting on top of your health issues.

I never played with Laney, but since Tony Iommi has been using them for years, they must be good right?

The Squier basses seem to be pretty good, these days Squier is pretty much Fenders budget series, next up would be the Highway one series of which I also hear great things.

I have an American Precision myself, that maybe out of your price range and/or needs but there's plenty of good budget stuff out there these days.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Laurie and Dirk, I've been looking at some of the cheaper Fender (mexi, highway 1) and more expensive squier (classic vibe etc) basses and I like what I see, I think you can get a lot of bass for not very much money. I also like the look of the Danelectro basses. I like the idea of getting a bass that's not trying to be a cheaper version of a more expensive guitar, although at the same time you can't deny that the workmanship on some of the nicer squier basses is very good.

Franzoni, this one has stood the test of time well! It's very scuffed and a couple of the pots crackle, but all in all it's in excellent condition, nice and punchy.

Witloofboer, thanks for the links! I must admit in my google searching I didn't find a lot of that, I've been looking through trying to find out more information about my specific model, I'll let you know when I find it! edit: It is the same style (layout, font, location of "laney amplification" etc) as these ones http://laney-posse.co.uk/brochures/Linebacker_%28USA%201981%29.pdf but it is 30 watts, so it came somewhere between this catalogue and the next catalogue http://laney-posse.co.uk/brochures/AOR_Range.pdf where the layouts etc are redesigned...)

Dr Bob, thanks for the support! I played for a while yesterday with no problems so I'm hopeful I've put it behind me!

You can always ask at the Laney forum what others know about your amp. Some of them are collectors or may have the same amp. They know far more about Laney's than I do.

I find the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass to be awesome! I plays wonderfully (not as good as a fender but still very good), the sound is cool and it can handle a lot of different genres. It's not a "funk only" bass like some people would expect. Apart from all that it does handle slap and pop very well. I always play with my fingers so I don't really know how it is with a pick. But for the price, this is an excellent instrument!
