I was at a birthday party the other day and heard a modded/retubed Peavey Valve King (freakin cheap)and was very impressed...a buddy of mine bought one awhile back and the difference outta the box compared to one shown a little bit of love is night and day!...there are tons of superior amps out there...but for approx. $300 it's a hard one to beat for the money!

That JVM looks like a real nice amp, you could also choose the 50 watt model (JVM205H) which is nearly as loud, but breaks up a lot earlier.
As you may know, the best sounding distortion comes from a tube power amp pushed into oblivion.

Couple this with a Celestion Vintage 30 loaded 2x12 or 4x12 cab and you'll have a nice halfstack that's more than able to compete with any band.

Some good points being raised here...really what you need to ask yourself is ...

1/.. how much you have to spend...?

2/..what type of music are you going to be playing..?..no point getting a Fender Blues jr for thrash metal...

3/ will you be using it live..? be realistic..you would need a decent wattage amp to compete with a moderately loud drummer unless you have an excellent PA and monitoring system and even then it might struggle plus if you plan on using pedals like delay and chorus a cleanish amp is probably best especially if you plan on putting them in the front end of the amp like most players do..with pedals, from personal experience an amp with a good bit of clean headroom works best..for me anyway....

4/ what do you need the amp to do..? i.e do you need multiple channels, effects loops etc...if not a older, single channel amp might be all you need especially again if your using pedals...

like the brut i also heard a peavey (a classic 30 combo) on hols a couple of years ago in a big town square in spain and it sounded great with just a mic in front going through the PA for a bit of spread to the sound.... also portability is a factor if you need to get it around... i saw a guy outside a gig in town the other night, standing waiting on a lift at 4 in the morning with a brand new Vox AC-30 and a gibson Les Paul, not very safe or wise in a busy city at that hour of the morning........if you don't have a car and have to use public transport for rehearsing be pratical...when i was younger and didn't have a car i got myself a good sounding solid state 1x12 combo for gigs as i could carry it on the bus with my guitar in a gigbag on my back with a few pedals in a bag....now you can get something like the Fender Blues Jr that is portable and won't break your back..or the bank....

How 'bout 3 more questions, then.

Do you want a head & cab(s) or a combo?

Will you use pedals for distortion or do you want the amp to do that?

Do you want a good clean & a good distortion channel or can you settle for 1 or the other?

Something which might fit your needs: Laney AOR's. (Yes, I am a Laney-fanatic ). Both combo & head + cab versions. $300 - $600 (depending on wattage). It should look like this:

Features two channels, crystal clean to high gain, effectsloop, reverb (on some models). Sounds like a JCM 800 on steroids.
