Home-brewed (including laying out and etching the board). WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too many hours - don't try this at home.

My only excuse is that i can't justify $400 for a real one.

Hi Laurie

Too Cool...

You get my first Banana-Lama.

Now you know how time consuming.
But ultimately rewarding it all is.

So how well does it work? & other Techie questions.

You are welcome to mail me an un-drilled PCB ...

Did you ever see my Home brew MXR DynaComp Cone?
Some of the pics are a little blurry, I didn't have a Macro mode on
my older digital camera.

Is that the silver screw version? If you had to out a price on it, how much [including labor] do you think it's worth? Maybe you could start a small company that sells to people like us who don't want to pay $400 also.

And yes a Banana llama from me also.

Thanks guys! I'll be starting a llama farm next week...

Actually... BYOC have a thing called a "lazy sprocket" kit. You can buy them pre-assembled. http://www.buildyourownclone.com/lazysprocket.html

I couldn't compete with them for price cause they do it for a living

If anyone is interested in the PCB artwork to make your own, I can send a copy - just PM me. FYI - it is true-bypass (so no flip-flop in the circuit).

How does it work? I have never heard a Boss one, but the clone does what the real one is described to do. Sensitivity works exactly like you would expect. Attack adjusts from 0 to about 350ms. Playing single, distinct notes works really well. Fast runs don't work well - as expected (the swell circuit stays "energised" unless you have low/zero volume "space" in the incoming signal for the capacitor to discharge).

Didn't really understand the Boss service notes about adjusting the trimmer, so I adjusted it until the output signal started to fall then backed it off a fraction. Seems to work just fine.

Hardest thing was finding the 0.68F electrolytic - can't buy them here (easily - they can be ordered!), so had to recover one from an old junk stereo. I used a 2SK30A FET I bought from Thailand - I bought a lot of 10 of them some time ago. I expected them to be out-of-spec, but trying an ex-Boss one (left over from my true-bypass mod on the SD-1) there was no difference. I used BC547 GP small signal transistors for the NPN transistors - no problems.

Hi Laurie,
JUST caught this thread. DAMN nice!!! I will, however, forgoe the "banana llama", and instead launch 100 flaming hamsters in a celebratory gesture in your general direction.
YOU ASKED FOR 'EM!
Watch the Canuck skies tonight, those aren't falling stars you're seeing.
Definitely better than my $15 Behringer clone. Hats off to you & congrats. Nice job!!!

I'm in line with the rest, build me one. Screw BYOC, I want (LBMP) Laurie Built My Pedal.

You know, if a few people actually do want one of these(?), i could set up a small production run. I'd do them in a black case with black knobs (just like the red one above, but black) - to keep with the SG-1 theme. No screen printed label on the front or anything, and I'd put a 3mm LED in because the 5MM one in a fat silver bezel looks a bit tacky to my eye.

Like the FA-1 I'm looking at building, these would be about $100 plus shipping (trust me - that won't make me a millionaire, it is just the component cost plus a little beer money for the effort).

WOW... if there ever was a reason to order 'blank' cases from boss that only have the two pot holes in them. Having said that, your Red Box is TOTALLY TOTALLY boutique and understated. remarkably cool.

G'day! Just reviving this thread to mention that I will be redesigning this SG-1 clone to a "standard" size - which will let me add a battery in the box. It will be a "standard" boutique pedal.

I've tried it side-by-side with my real SG-1 and you really can't tell the difference.

I'll post some pics when I have the new prototype finished. I'm building a couple in the New Year for friends locally. If you are interested in one, let me know and I'll tag one for you.
