the DOD FX84 Milk Box was generally regarded as one of the better late-period DOD pedals. there were two cosmetic versions (with/without 'Udder' graphics):

I recently bought one, and am interested in hearing any suggestions for settings for specific applications. (I usually depend on compression from my amp's tubes for guitar, but use compression regularly when playing bass thru my solid-state bass amp.) any comparison with Boss' compression pedals would also be welcome.

if anyone has both versions of the Milk Box, I'd also like to know if there is any perceived difference in tone (or increased noise, etc.). I'm pretty sure the cosmetic change preceded the date that DOD production moved from USA to China, but I'm also unsure of that date. (all DOD FX-series pedals that were made in China have serial numbers with a V in them.)

Hi pawnshop_trash
I've spent the last few months auditioning compressors
& chasing down data, for various types & brands.

As far as I have found, I believe the FX84 Milk box, is an optical compressor.

I found another pic of the Udder graphics FX84.
I will try to post it here, when I find it.

If you go to the musicians friend web page, you will find 2 MP3 demo's of the FX84, do a search for "DOD FX84" or Milk Box or compressors.

I am really look forward to getting one of these, although it will probably, be the one with the newer cosmetics.

Do you have the pdf user manual? I have it if you need it, but you can down load it from DOD-Digitech.

It has about 4 settings to try out.

Mmmm, looks cool. I'm looking at one on a local auction site that I can probably get for $60NZ (about US$45) BUT I might be able to get a Boss RCL-10 half rack for around the same money.
Choices, choices...
Expert opinion anyone?
The one I'm looking at is also an 'udder' graphic.
What else is good and cheap in the compressor department?
Cheers!

Hi ammonite

If you aren't going to bid on the Milk box, would you post up the link so I can have a look at it.

As far as Compressors go, opinion seems to be to buy a Boss CS-2
I have heard the EHX electro Harmonix Black Finger Compressor, it's not cheap but is superb.
it has two optic circuits, one is LED for fast, & the other is lamp for slow response.

If you go to the Musicians friend web site and type in Black finger into the search box, on the lower part of the page you will see a video demo. NICE.
If you just search for compressor, you will see many demo's

Hi Dr Bob,
I spend altogether too much time on the 'Trade Me' site, which in NZ dominates all other auction sites.
BUT the thrill of the chase etc...

Cheers
