Does anyone use these pups? I wanted to exchange the stock SC in my neck with a silver or light blue. I just wanted to know what you guys thought'd be best fro classic rock, blues, and alternative.
thanks |

i would avoid them unless you want to sound like a recorded guitar.
i've had about 10 of them. several golds, 2 reds, 2 blues, 3 silvers, and a couple humbucker versions (gold/gold and red/red).
in my younger years i was confused and thought they sounded good, which they do, just not in live situations with a lot of volume.
honestly, you can get similar/better tone w/ the same noiseless design style with an emg select for $20 from stewmac.
i currently use dimarzio virtual vintage 2.1's in my strats. |

...Really... What would you say are there main drawbacks? What are some alternatives? How are those Dimarzio SCs? |

well, the drawbacks are:
artificial pickup dynamics, especially with volume changes. they sound basically the same at all volumes (when most pickups "open up" when the amp cranks). it's less noticeable at low volumes, but becomes super noticeable at gig volumes. you can get true neutral position tones but they are kinda lifeless. basically, lace sensors lack "quack" and are "ok" but way too expensive to be a sweet choice for the price range.
questions i would have are: 1. do you need noiseless? 2. what kind of budget do you want?
from your description it sounds like you want something over-wound w/ a good mid-pop to em.
for a noiseless alternative: 1. chris kinman, probably the woodstock model or somethin. these are the best single coils out there by far but expensive. 2. dimarzio virtual vintage. best for like $50. 3. emg select. best for like $20. |

if you don't care about noiseless, i'd probably recommend just going with GFS. it's not worth paying a ton for pickups, especially if they aren't noiseless.
GFS's $18 single coils should rival anything by seymour duncan and dimarzio in that price range.
also, the EMG select will suffer slightly from similar problems with the lace sensors, but not quite as badly. |

I saw that Dimarzio you mentioned and liked it, but it's a bit too low output. I need at leasr 7k.
I'd like at least less noise than the stock Fender SC. |

i wouldn't take DC resistance as the end all be all of output.
the magnet strength has a lot to do with it (at least how loud it appears to sound).
it's hard to find a 7k+ strat pickup that sounds like a strat.
if you need much higher than that you are gonna have to go with mini humbuckers for the most part, especially when you are talking about a neck pickup.
a virtual vintage blues might do it.
nearly any pickup will have less noise than a strat stock single coil.

| ive got a red lace sensor dually (humbucker) in an old marlin sidewinder with a coil tap and it sounds ok at reasonable volume - crank it up to concert levels and it gets very scratchy and a bit wooden imho. My main strat has a hot rail at the bridge and 2 vintage noidless in the middle/neck positions. Blows the sensor away !! |
