Hello!
I'm looking at replacing the neck pick-up in my Squier Tele, as I've discovered it screams at loud volumes when using distortions.
I know this is a complete mine-field as I've already done a lot of reading, but I wondered if any of you guys had any bits of wisdom to share.
I'm using the RC-50 and LOADS of effects (not all at the same time!) straight into a well EQued, good PA system.
I'm looking at a Lace Sensor Gold - is that a bad idea? |

I wouldn't think so..depends on what you play... The golds are a real strat like pup, dunno wat they'd sound like in a tele.
Johnny Greenwood used Lace's in his Tele in the early days ( might still...), and I love his tone. |

Sounds like your pup is too high, what are your measurements?

A friend of mine used to have a 70's tele with EMG's in it,from what i remember it sounded great,he swapped a Les Paul deluxe for it but after a few weeks the guy(some one he knew from way back) asked if he would swap back so he did... ...There are lots of different replacement pickups on the market for teles now..i put seymour duncans in my tele but i wasn't entirely happy with the result..i still have one in the neck and it can be a bit muddy sounding to my ears..as soon as i have a chance (and the money..!!) i think i will probably go for some original fender ones like the noiseless set i have in my squier strat.....the model of tele johnny greenwood uses came i think with the lace sensors installed,i think it's the model with the humbucker in the bridge position..... |

| I knew a tech whose passion was Gibson mini-humbuckers in Tele necks. Duncan makes good replacements for those as well. Try something unique.. a Filtertron or something! |

Thanks for for replies. I've experimented with the pick up height - didn't seem to make a great amount of difference. I actually moved them closer to the strings - my logic being that they wouldn't need to be turned up so loud. Is that totally misguided? |

Fender have recommended heights for their pickups in relatation to the strings for optimal response from the guitar and it will increase volume slightly...personally i find them too high especially on the strats middle pickup which gets in the way of picking with either my fingers or plec...i have read if you have the pickup too high it can cause the guitar to sound out of tune proably something to do with the magnetic pull on the string....i have one of the jap silver series squiers from the early 90's which are highly regarded in certain quarters...the guitar itself is great and very well built but i never liked te sound of the original pickups in it compared with a pukka american fender tele... especially the neck pickup...if you want the original fender twang, get fender pickups..if your looking for something else,as verivorax pointed out there are many options open to you as in regard to types of pickups you can use...keith richards and andy summers both have gibson PAF's in the neck position of their teles...i have a love/hate relationship with the pickups in my tele..i have a SD hot stack in the neck and i reistalled the original tele bridge pickup for the moment as the SD hot rails i had in there was doing my head in....just when i think it sounds like shit, someone in the band will say out of the blue..'that tele has a great sound'...!!.... but i think i will eventually get some original fenders for it,probably either noiseless for tele or maybe some of the NOS range they have on the market.... personally i probably won't go with SD,DiMarzio,Kinmans etc again after my last experience....i know the guitar is good and i want the fender twang out of it so thats the way i'm planning on going..... |

EMG's. Ceramic or Alnico. They absolutely rule as far as I am concerned.
A mini humbucker in the neck is also a killer set up. |

| Bill Lawrence Keystones get good reviews, I picked up a pair for when I get tired of my Squier pups. The guy has been making pups for decades. |
