Those you see on here saying they can't get "that" sound and have all manner of distortion boxes, or all manner of modifications, are usually the bedroom players, spending their time doing cover versions. Running their tube amp cranked up on a stage or in a studio is probably something they have never tried and only dream about.
Once they've done it, they'll probably realise the amp (not the pedals) was the issue all along.
hehe. my live tone is nailed. i'm extremely happy with my tone at gig volumes. downside is that my amps don't really start cooking until the 90db+ mark and the majority of my playing is done late night in an apartment.
distortion pedal accumulation and modding for me is 95% rooted in boredom/collecting. the remaining 5% is to nail the perfect low volume sounds for the covers i mess around on :)
i used to be anti-modding, but lately i've discovered a lot about it. to the fledgling rocker trying to jam out through a crate GX20, investing $5 in mod parts to stick in his $20 craigslist DS-1 is probably the 2nd best investment he could make (with the best investment being in a nice tube amp). considering that too many people tend to pour money into amps that don't fall into the "nice tube amp" category, the mod parts might eventually turn out to be a great investment.
what baffles me the most is when someone drops $300 on a tube distortion pedal and stick it in front of their crappo solid state amp. |

I think what might happen is that the "someone" mentioned here doesn't like to buy stuff used, so they are limited to new tube amps with the attached price tags - so the $300 pedal seems like a good deal to them compared to a $2000 new Marshall?
Unlike us of course - my last good/used tube amp cost $375

those people are silly.
i've met those people and they always have some line about "wanting something nice" and so they bypass used and go new. they mean nice looking, which implies nothing of good sounding.
even now though, there's been a slew of made in china tube amps coming over that have low new retail price points. peavey's valve king series ain't gonna win any tone of the year awards but with the inflated price on most new tube amps they're quite a value. granted, i still wouldn't buy one new... although i did buy one up this weekend VK112 50 watt combo for $159 used.
there's been somewhat of a return to low wattage class A tube amps that retail under $400. it's getting to the point where it's not very difficult to snag a solid tube amp for under $300 used.

yah. it's getting silly.
i personally prefer class A/B for my rock stuff and that takes a touch of diggin... but i've picked up a few more budget friendly amps to stick into my list of budget friendly amps... now that i've had to cross off a lot of amps that were cheap 3-6 years ago and are now double/triple what they were.
sadly, the newer cheap tube amps are a bit stripped down on durability (too many plastic everythings...) but at least the sound quality is a cut above most solid state amps. |

i see your point, but i have a few distortions for the simple fact that the music we play requires for a lot of noise at times, and if i have 3 or 4 distortions going at once, all of differing tones etc then i get a huge wall of noise :)
if we ever find a bass player we'll get a demo finished off an uploaded so you can hear what i mean ;) |
