A buddy was recently telling me he loved his booteek overdrives (Box o' Rock adn MI Crunch Box) and next, he wanted to get himself a nice compressor - a Keeley. I started to tell him I had tried a CS-3, and then got big improvement by modding it (Allums Opto Mod). Before I could finish the story (which was that, even though the modded pedal was much improved, I had found I just don't get along with compressors) he put "modded CS-3" together with "Keeley" in his head and has decided to have me repair and mod a couple of CS-3s he had lying around. I assume he's expecting booteek tone for small $$$.
I don't even know what a Keeley compressor sounds like.
Anyway, who's got some good mods for a CS-3 that fixes whatever ails it? I'm going to have to go with the consensus here, since I'm no compressor connoisseur.
BTW, I've already looked at Wampler's "Fat Body Mod" which is similar to the Allum's Opto. Changes a few Rs and Cs to fatten it up, and a few more Cs with same-value substitutes to quiet it down.
Hit me up with what's worked for you!
P.S. The good news is, if I get these CS-3s fixed up, I get to keep one when I'm done. |

Sorry can't help with the mods but i took mine off the board altogether and bought a HZD booster off Laurie instead.... ... i don't know if my CS-3 was a bit iffy(i had planned also on modding it but hadn't the time/couldn't be bothered) but even with the HZD off i would swear my tone is fatter and better sounding... and when you turn the HZD booster on... and i was a committed CS-3 user for over 10 years but with the HZD i get no horrible, howling feedback when used with overdrive that i used to get with the CS-3 as a clean booster plus the constant 'squash' that a compressor brings to your tone started to annoy me...between my guitar and amp i now have..
Stock Dunlop Wah(might do stinkfoots true bypass mod in the future)
HZD boooster (true bypass)
SD twintube classic (true bypass)
CE-2
LS-2.......the rest of my boss pedals are in a loop off the LS-2 along with the tuner.... |

I remain very happy with my CS-3 modded as per the thread above although I have changed C1 back to something closer to its original value (I have put in a .022uf) so that it once again operates in the treble rather than on mids. I find this more useful.

Ill have to try these also. I have a stock CS-3 laying around. I also have an Allums modded CS-3. Its a very good mod. Does everything it says it does. The Allums GE-7 mod is great too. |
