I've been thinking my PH-2 sounds weird for a while now, so I thought I'd ask you folks what your PH-2 sounds like.
Clean: feeding it with a clean guitar signal it sounds fine, just like a phaser should.
Distorted: the attack seems to "resonate" - it sounds like it's making "solid state distortion" out of the pick attack (but just the atttack - once the chord settles down it sounds OK). Sounds similar driving it with a DS-1, MT-2 and ML-2.
Is this weird, or is that just how the PH-2 responds to distortion? My PH-3 doesn't do this, but I think it's a completely different beast electronically. I've started thinking the PH-2 is basically OK because it sounds fine with clean input...
What is your experience with the PH-2? |

my experience is that the PH-2 sounds god awful with distortion. made it sound like a wah pedal all the way down with a little swishing sound underneath.
the only reason i chased a ph-1 down even though i use a phaser once in a blue moon was because i found the ph-2 to be that mediocre when distorted. |

Well OK...!! Thanks for that. I don't feel like I'm imagining things anymore...
Hmmm, how does the PH1r sound with distortion?

were your experiences with it on par with mine? hehe
PH-1r = much better w/ distortion than the PH-2.
i thought the PH-1 was a little warmer so i decided to keep that one. |

i meant with the PH-2 sounding like having a wah on all the way down + a swoosh underneath.
i remember it being bad both before and after any distortion but better if it was before the distortion. |

I have both and I agree the PH-2 doesn't do well w/ dirt but I've always dug it clean- very unique sounding 12 stage phaser that should get more love than it does (fwiw mine is a Japan version). My Ph-1r on the other hand does great w/ dirt which I guess is to be expected as its a much more conventional sounding phaser. |

Hmmm... with the switch set to "position II" it sounds like a wah for sure. Sounds "normal" with the switch in position I other than the break-up on the attack, and that break-up sounds awful!
I haven't tried it before the distortion - I'll give that a go tonight. I do like it with a clean signal though.
I guess my main concern was whether it was a dud. With the crap sound others are seeing with a distorted input, I'm comfortable that the pedal is actually OK and that's "a good thing". I have a PH-1r coming this week (thanks Zentropa!) and I expect that the PH-1r will be everything I was hoping the PH-2 was going to be. That being said, I did pick the PH-2 up from Cash Convertors years ago for about $40 so it's all good!!!
