hi,
I'm looking for a half rack noise gate unit. Partyl for the sake of place and weight. I can't imagine you "need" a full 19" to household a gate unit hehe. Don't know why microrack format isn't used more often.
Can't find a lot of info and experiences about the NS-50 and how it compares to the NS2 or rocktron's Hush.
Feedback and swirling noise with flanger/phasers etc are the enemy.
Thx |

I'm a bit confused about Gates and Suppressors.
I always thought that a gate roughly just measures input signal (dailed in with the treshhold) and cuts of the signal entirely when it goes under that treshhold.
A "supressor" sounds more like a unit that filters away hum/his/noise from the signal real time.
The Hush in my Replifex (between preamp and poweramp) only reduces hiss/hum when the guitar (and me ) is idling. As soon af I play (f.i. clean with a phaser, I can hear the phased noise mixed with the notes I play).
The Boss producs, NS-50 and NS-2, are named Supressors. Are these really just gates or do they filter out noise as you play?
The description on bossarea.com main site sound more like units the effectively remove noise as you play. |

Noise gates like the NF-1 are made to only be turned on between playing, or during slience in a song
Noise suppressors are made to be on all the time, cutting background noise |

ah, I forgot about the NF-1. that's a gate indeed. So both NS-2 and NS-50 filter away some background noise while you are playing right ?
Hoped somebody could share some experience about the NS-50 |

I have owned an NS-50 for many years. It is a gate, so it opens when you play (or feed it a signal that is above the threshold you set), and closes when you stop playing. The signal passes straight through when it is open, ie it does not try to filter out hiss or other kinds of unwanted background noise.
I haven't used mine for quite a while, but I have been very pleased with its performance in the past. I have used it for playing thrash metal with lots of stops and starts, and it really helps in enhancing that kind of dynamic. |
