Great job bringing together all those links. It's a good overview to the different pocket synths out available.
I like the SYB-5 better than the SYB-3. I've been using them mainly with a guitar as input and the SYB-5 tracks better and has the expression pedal input that I find useful. The others here I haven't tried but some of the sound samples are impressive. |

Kulten, what did you use as imput for your own samples?? Was it bass where you put the effected sound on full so without noticing the orginal signal?
You soundclips sound very good, do recogonise some of the sounds but just wondering how you can get them to sound so clean. |

I plug a drum machine into the SYB.
Then knob tweaking. |

kulten, i see that you like this pedal. (syb) boss pedals are a one way street in my house. there is no trading, no profit. they come in, they stay in. I have no interest in the market. I get my pedals cheap, by looking hard..or even by finding them(!)(my heart just leapt at the memory of that magic moment)... Anyway. there have only been two 'rejections'
1. the syb 2. the ps5
These pedals had to go..they were tainting my impression of the other pedals by mere association. the syb..well. i just couldnt believe my ears and the ps5..jesus christ on a bicycle that pedal was bad. are you serious..you use the syb to make sounds?

yes !
live acts with a DR-110 and a SYB-3... and sometimes the SYB-5 for background LFO effect.
here, the SYB-3 (saw) and the SYB-5 (saw + LFO) :

Hey Kulten,
I have tried this trick with the SBY-3 as well, used an electronic metronome, then into the Sansamp classic, then into the SBY-3 from there signal went into gtr.amp.
Now you may like the idea of the Sansamp classic:
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.tech21nyc.com/images/classic_image.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.tech21nyc.com/classic.html&h=284&w=403&sz=19&tbnid=svF1U0ri-L52_M:&tbnh=85&tbnw=121&hl=en&start=6&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsansamp%2Bclassic%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG
With the Sansamp you have tree different gainstructures, all three different setting accent the beat differently. Basiscally this means that you can hear more notes coming from your SBY-3, almost like............ an arpeggiator!! VERY COOl.
You could try different preamps to create a similar effect. Pitty that I cannot put up MP3s to let you hear how this patch sounds like.
Anyway I do like the whole thing, and never really thought about using the SBY-3 as an instrument on its own.
Thanks for the sparkling off that idea!! |

| well when I started electronic music 12 years ago, I wanted a bass synth and a basic drum machine for minimal electo live... and I said to myself a pedal synth was the clue : no keyboards, no sequencers, no MIDI... no problems ! |

So you would not like to add just one more stompbox and be able to get some more notes out of your SBY-3 then..........?? |

Oh I get your point man, it was just such a surprise that adding a preamp infront of the SBY-3 gives you also more notes. I did not expect that at all!! |

One of my long-term projects is to put a Roland GK pickup on my old SSD NS-4. It's not pretty, being all black & a little scratched, and the basic sound is a little too flat now I'm used to my Warwick Thumb 4.
It would be fun to break it out for one or two songs in a set and make some seriously messed up noises :)
