Hi, I'm new here, so hello! I've been collecting Boss pedals for a few months now; and was very happy to come across this site; it's amazing! I'd like to know what peoples opinions are on flangers; I was tempted to look for the HF-2; some reviews said that the effect was gentler than the BF2/3. Is it too gentle though to be noticed?

the HF-2 sounds very nice indeed. it leaves the low end alone and only flanges the higher frequencies, so it's much better suited for rhythm guitar (or bass) in my opinion. but believe me, it is a noticeable effect. if you can find it, I recommend the HF-2.

regarding the BF-2 and BF-3, they flange a guitar's entire signal, and thus can overwhelm your tone (but sometimes overwhelming flange is what the song needs). if you want to choose one of them, I would seek out a used BF-2 first; my BF-3 doesn't sound nearly as good as my made in Taiwan BF-2. the old made in Japan BF-2 supposedly sounds even better than the later made in Taiwan versions, but I only have the made in Taiwan version so I can't comment on that.

I have several flangers, including MIJ BF2, MIT BF2, MIJ HF2 and MIT HF2. The HF2 is my favorite as the BF2 can sound a little muddy to my ears. The HF2 is indeed noticeable, but it depends on what you're after too.

if you want a flanger, and a Boss one, the HF2 is the way to go. either mit or mij is just fine. in my opinion :)

While the HF-2 is a really nice flanger, The BF-2 is my personal choice for flanging. I prefer this on cause of the thick sound and the fact that it could double as a nice chorus in a pinch (should my CE-2 or CE-3 die on me).
