Pardon me if this is in the wrong area, but it didn't seem to belong in the Tech FAQ area.

I bought a Boss RV-5 on ebay. It arrived today...

Plug a cord into the input jack, and the "Check" light goes on. Step on the foot switch (any number of times), and the light does not go off. Plug a cord into the output jack, and it becomes readily apparent that while the signal is indeed going through of the pedal (and coming out in stereo), there is no reverb happening whatsoever. So it says it is always on, but it acts like it is always off.

Any thoughts on what can be done about this? I'd rather not mess with it myself, as I ultimately may have to send it back, but if this is fixable for under 20 bucks, it's better than having to pay return shipping and then go buy another pedal. Anyone know a cheap repair shop here in Chicago?

Hi redpill,

At first welcome to the forum!

Sad to hear the story about your RV-5 'cause I really like mine, good effect!
Please try it out to operate with a well-known good battery (let's say with a brandnew) or with a good AC adaptor what is supporting well your other BOSS pedals!
After this trial if the phenomenon still existing should be think about repairing or sending back!

I have many BOSS pedals (13-15pcs) form german Ebay and non of them have any problem (I got them as their advertisement by the owner) therefore it is even hard to hear if you have got a really non-working, relatively expensive box!
Inform us about your proceeding and decision!

cheers

I tried it with a brand new battery, and the same problem persists. I'm not going to pay to repair it without any idea of what the problem is and what it might cost, so I'll be sending it back and losing the shipping cost. It's so frustrating when a dealer sends out dead equipment. They had to know it is bad when they sent it. The box arrived in perfect condition.

Hi redpill

Welcome to the forum from Australia.

If the RV-5 was new, it should still be under warranty.

Either way, ask the store to replace it, better loosing the postage, than having a dead pedal,
or worse not being able to return it, because you tampered with it.

Sometimes things don't work straight out of the box, the industry term for this is "infant mortality".

Call them, be polite, & you will find most places are very reasonable about such issues, they may even offer to refund your money & postage.
or compensate you in some other way.

Regards Dr. Bob

It is a used pedal, but since it arrived DOA, I will get my money back. I'll be polite because that is my nature. But they really haven't any choice in the matter. They can refund me my money, find me a working pedal in equal or better condition, or have legal problems. I was just hoping it could be fixed. And unless they are exceptionally nice to me, they will be getting some rather intensively negative feedback. Sending out DOA equipment is just about the most easily preventable thing in retail.

Thanks for everyone's contributions.
