I will be checking out a Mexican Fender Standard Stratocaster on Tuesday... it's a tobaccoburst color, or dark sunburst. It's a 1998 model.
So who knows what about these machines? I like my MIM Tele well enough, but don't know too much about the MIM Strats.
Any opinions, thoughts, info?
Thanks

| My MIM strat was the 60th anniversary special edition model, with higher quality pickups (Tex-Mex) and a generally nicer quality satin maple neck and better trem block and saddles. I tried it along with a couple of Mexican and American strats, and it just sounded and felt right. I found that the Mexican strat pickups were fine but a little thin, but then that is the most obvious upgrade. My main issue with the MIM models were underwhelming frets and cheap pots. The bodies and necks themselves were good though. I'm sure a well set up Mexican strat would give an American strat a run for its money on playability, but just won't have quite has much clarity to the sound. On the plus side, I'm no fan of the 2 point trems used on American models, I much prefer the 6 screw vintage synchronized version. |

| I tested out a lot of strats about 3 years ago. I found that there was quite a bit of difference from guitar to guitar. This applied both to Mexico strats and the US Highway1 models. Don't know if things has changed since then but I wouldn't recommend buying without testing first. |

Go for the MIM Classic 50īs or 60īs, these are very good guitars stock and with a pickup change you have a really good Strat. But as usual if possible try out several before buying. I think that many MIM Classics are as good as MIJ vintage models.
