Greetings all;

Thought I might start this thread as I keep saying I learn something new about Boss compacts pretty much every day - information which does not seem to be mentioned anywhere else on the interweb. Rather than start a new thread everytime I discover a different shade of yellow on an OD-1 I thought it would be cool to throw it all here....

Any new discoveries or anomolies about the pedals themselves and construction techniques, design changes, sound variation, even different combinations of pedals that work really well together.....any discoveries that we made today? Its all educational (at least thats what I keep telling myself, I'm sure this knowledge will come in useful someday) so lets hear them!!

I shall set the ball rolling and say today in Boss School I learned that the early Boss pedals prior to mid 1980 (ie the ss ones) have really short battery wires fitted from the factory, and you can barely fit the battery in the compartment without breaking the spring off!! This is why so many of the old pedals have been 'modified' and the battery connectors have been extended - to make them usable. What a dumbass design!! Never knew that before.........

Any recycling of information is welcome of course, but if someone spots it please provide a link to where this has been mentioned before so the poster can read more about the subject.....

(this is where someone pipes up and goes 'chrissy; we already had a thread like this 3 years ago and the link is here:' lol)

I only recently noticed that the LED in an early CE-2 is just gooped into place. At some point they started mounting the LED on a small PCB that screws into the case, but the early ones just have a metal "tube" cast into the housing that the LED goes into.

Goood idea.

About 1 to 2 months ago,
Laurie & I figured out that there are at least 3 variations of chip sets used in the MT-2's.

Not a bad discovery for a a pedal that has been around a bit,
& is one of Boss's biggest sellers.

Laurie even started a new post about our findings.

Regards Dr. Bob

I was about to dredg up an older DN-2 thread to post this, but since I'm here...

The DN-2 keeps its level no matter how softly you play it. The only thing that changes with your playing intensity is the distortion or drive. Very cool (IMHO).

That an SD-1 with the Eternity mod rocks in a major way, and it looks really cool with red and blue Davies-style knobs.

and today I learnt that the repeat rate dial on a DM-2 works in reverse

and also I despise hacked pedals (the above DM-2), especially the ebay favourite 'stealth mod' (ie you know nothing of the mod until it turns up in the post looking all sad and with holes drilled in the case, extra sockets fitted and jumper wires bodged into the board grrr)

One of these days I'm going to have the pleasure of hearing an original analog boss delay.....(sigh)

Here's the outside. Inside's going to have to wait 'til the next time have it off the board.

I just learned that there are only 12, out of ca 310 Boss products with the number 4 in them. Whats up with that?

(KM-400, KM-40, KM-04, KM-4, BX-400, BX-40, BX-4, RCB-4 (a case..), J-44, MPD-4, SP-404, PQ-4 (1 out of 93 pedals!).)

And Roland: Just the Jupiter 4 and the MC-4...

As explained in the Boss book, the number 4 is unlucky in Japan, kinda like number 13 in other countries.
So therefore they skipped it, except for the PQ-4.
