Anyone have an RV-3 that makes a noise when switching? A subtle but noticable "k-lunk"? Not enough to really piss you off, but it's definitely there. It ONLY happens when there is signal going through the pedal - play a big chord and hit stomp it and it's there. With no signal, there is no noise.

I just repaired my RV-3. The previuos owner did some dodgy repairs and I had to replace one of the switching JFETs. I couldn't get an SMD JFET (2SK880) so used a 2SK30A (same as the switching FET in most non-SMD pedals).

Wondering if the subtle k-lunk is an artifact of the 2SK30A, or if all RV-3's do it??

Hi Laurie

Is it possible that this is due, to the FET's now being a mis-matched pair,
between the, SMD JFET (2SK880) the 2SK30A?

Have you checked the RdsOn for both?

Just thinking out loud.

Regards Dr. Bob

Yeah, that's quite possible. Didn't want to go pulling the second SMD device off the board if other people were experiencing the same thing though

The more i think about it, the more i think you are right. The c30 probably turns off slower than the c880 turns on and that gives the little "volume bump" - both on momentarily.

I'll swap the other c880 tonight and see what i get

I used to have an RV-3, with signal going through it and hitting it on you would get a very short "no sound"
Not sure if this is typical but I seem to recall reading someone else had the same thing? There was no k thunk though.

Well, I've just spent about an hour wrestling with this beastie and I'm no closer to an answer.

Theoretically... it should have been the rise time of the gate switching for the FETs. It must be something else because no amount of mucking around produced a noticable result.

Time to admit that "this is how RV-3's are"... Into storage with it and out with the RV-5

Just reviving this topic...

The switching noise is still there. Small but noticable. Do people generally get a small level drop when hitting the switch to turn on an RV-3, or a small volume boost?

Anyway. I've been looking for one used to replace the repaired one in my collection. The price on these things is always high, so I thought I'd give it another chance.

I like it. A lot. Going to have to start an RV-3 appreciation thread...

I would say replace the switch, it might be a bad one, you get them once and a while, not very often tho

Hey laurie, ill join you in a rv 3 appreciation thread! I absolutley love mine, it hasn't left my board since the day I bought it.

Although I do agree with you that there is a small noise. But its not enough to annoy me so I don't mind :) I wouldn't mind buying another rv3 actually!!
