Lets say I want to filter out high frequencies. Do I put a cap in the path, or is it a resister? Or both?

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure your tone pots on your guitars have capacitors, so, you know.
But I'd wait for one of the experts to confirm or rubbish this.

A simple low pass filter (removes high frequencies) is an "RC" filter (you need both a cap and a resistor). Take a look here:
