OK. Definitively... from a side by side test.
DM-2 Tone - dark, trailing off to sludgy Fidelity - 4 out of 10 "Analogue happy factor" (how good does it feel to use it) - 9.5 out of 10
DD-7 set to analogue mode Tone - medium/dark, and the echos stay that way - no trail off to sludge Fidelity - 6 out of 10 "Analogue happy factor" (how good does it feel to use it) - 8 out of 10
Conclusion I have DD-2, DD-3, DD-6, DD-7, DM-3, DM2, and an Ibanez DL5. The only thing that sounds really close to the DM-2 is the DM-3 (no surprise there). Next closest is the DD-7 in analogue mode. Next closest is the DD-2, followed by the DD-3 and Ibanez DL5 (both nice, but a bit clinical). The DD-6 isn't even close to the DM-2.

Laurie (or anyone), have you tried the MXR Carbon Copy? That's a genuine BBD delay.
There's also the RE-20, which emulates tape echo rather than BBDs, but is a very good emulation nonetheless. Not 100%, but close, I think. |

Hi Laurie Thanks for the effort you went to with your side by side tests.

I have both a DD-7 and a Carbon Copy. I like them both, though the CC is noisy. It makes a hissing sound along with the repeats. This, of course, is authentic, but I prefer the less than authentic DD-7 because it's quiet.
The CC is also fatter and richer sounding. If it were not for the hissing noise, I would love it. Before the CC, I had a Maxon AD999, which is even richer and darker than the CC. It also has less headroom, and I could never get it to stop distorting on me. For weaker pickups, it's great. For hot pickups, it's too dirty for my taste.
The DD-7 has most of the cool aspects of a real analog delay, without all the lo-fi quirks. It also has more delay time -- 800 ms in analog mode. I wish the really long delay times were available in analog mode, but they are only on the digital modes.
Besides the analog mode, I like the reverse mode. All in all, the DD-7 is much more versatile than the Carbon Copy. You could make a case for having both on the same board, but the DD-7 alone is enough for me. I will probably sell my CC eventually. |

Great, thanks for the info! My DD-7 did not come with a manual. Guess I'd better download one. |
