i use all boss pedals on my board except for an old rocktek phaser pedal and a crybaby wah,i was thinking of changing the phaser for a boss ph3 but i have seen some mixed reviews about it,would i be better off searching for a ph1 or ph2?any feedback would be welcome.. the rocktek is on its last legs and for a 'cheap' pedal has been a good friend i would like to retire it before it gives up the ghost...!! |

PH-2
Uh, could get one for around $50.00. some sell for more, some less; BOSSAREA forum admin's research suggests that there is no difference between taiwan or japanese made PH-2s as there apparently was no change to the circuit board. There may be some cool factor having a BlackBack MIJ version though.
I had 3 PH-3s. The 4 stage mode sounded very cool, you get a little bit of that swasshy wah sound that edge does on the bridge of Elevation, BUT the 4 stage sound had a large volume drop compared to all other modes on the pedal AND your dry unphased signal. I loved that sound so much, i kept buying and selling PH-3s thinking I got a bum pedal, but after 3 tries, I gave up and went back to PH-2 - the PH-2 can almost do the 4 stage sound by using only the rate and depth control and leaving the other two controls at 0, but it doesn't have that swash effect

| I say go for the ph-2, got it over the ph-3 because the ph-3 sounds to digital and has a lot of useless modes. |

| ph-2 is a solid phaser. chances are it will be all you need in a phaser. probably cheaper than a PH-3 as well. |

I have both PH-1 and PH-2 and I like PH-1 the most. It sounds more like a 70s phaser (I like that) and it is easy to get a nice sound out of it, just two knobs. I have tried to get the same sound from both PH-1 and PH-2, but its hard (but possible I think).

| I have 2 ph-2's on my pedal board and they ROCK. I had a ph-3 but it broke down shorly after I got it. The older pedals sound warmer to me, I don't really trust the new ones. |

| I have two ph-2's on my board. I bought a ph-3 when they first came out and mine had switch problems. I love the older boss pedals. One of the ph-2's I have had for 9 years. |

Hello there! I only have a PH-1r, so I can't really say which one's the best, but the PH-1r's sound is very warm and "cool" . After all this praise for the PH-2, maybe I should give that one a shot, as well! Anyway, I'd say you wouldn't be completely wrong to check out the PH-1r. Very nice effect, to say the least .
Cheers. |

The obvious answer to the question in the subject is: "All of them", but I can see how that's not always possible
Out of the lot I would choose the PH-2. The PH-1 does 70s phasing better but the PH-2 isn't far behind and the added versatility gives you a much wider range of sounds. |

PH-2 DEMO :
from an old track (1998...) with a Casio organ into the PH-2 (and the SYB-3 for the bass sound) :

with the 2 different modes. |

| I know that everyone seems to hate it, but the PH-3 is really not a bad phaser at all. The only thing that I've found to dislike about it is a slight volume drop when you turn it on. Soundwise, I can get pretty close to any phaser that I've heard before . . . |
