An Eq will boost the frequency spectrum chosen by the user. The EH-2 will boost harmonic components of the main signal.
A 1kHz signal will always be a composited signal put together by lots of harmonic components of the root frequency. The high frequency components (usualy above 5kHz) of the signal will often be filtered off when the signal goes through many effects, cables and amps. By boosting these high frequency components the EH-2 is able to get back some of the sparkle and brilliance of the original sound. |

I believe that in principle it was based on the concept of an "aural exciter", sort of like the rack mount units made by companies like Aphex and dbx.
Years ago, when I collected/traded cassette tapes of live recordings, I would make cassette to cassette copies through a dbx Project 1 spectral enhancer... it wouldn't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but if there recording was of decent enough quality it had the effect of removing a generation or two from the tape sound quality. If the tape was in really bad shape it wouldn't do much of anything except add more noise. I still have that dbx unit.
The EH-2 will restore some high-end sparkle to the guitar's tone, and depending on how you set the "mix" control it can also slightly alter the instrument's overall tone. Almost seems like you get more of a scooped-midrange effect on one sode of "mix" versus the other.

Hey, thanks. I'll have to try one.
What's fair price for one of these in good average condition? |

EH-2 do something more than just boosting the high frequencies, I have tried getting the same effect with EQs with no success. EH-2 adds something an EQ wont do. You can experience this by yourself just using EH-2 alone and then try to get the same effect with an EQ. I cant live without EH-2, it just do miracles to muddy-sounding pedal-lines a<nd to my sound in general.

| i agree with goran. once you tried the EH-2, you'll feel different the time you take it out of your effects chain. |

Sunburst: Im not stopping telling you until you get an EH-2, thats the best advice I ever given you! The worst have been Stinkfoot DS-1, and thats because we have different opinions on ODs. By the way get two EH-2 as you have a tendency to buy two of every rare pedal.

Relax Goran, I promise you I will get an EH-2 sometime soon. You have made me too curious about it, so I will have to give it a try, when I find one for a good price. Who knows, I may end up getting two! |

| To get a good picture of what EH-2 does, slightly exaggerated, think that you have a carpet over your amp. Using EH-2 is like removing the carpet. |

Ah, the old audiophile blanket & speaker analogy. So open and airy....
So many bad memories.
Grace and peace,

I'm trying to decide between a Boss EH-2 and a BBE Sonic Stomp (which is their Sonic Maximizer in stompbox format). Can anyone tell me which is better? They both serve the same purpose, but I'm not sure where the similarities (if any) end. I'm leaning towards the EH-2 to put on the end of my 11-pedal chain. However, you all know that the EH-2 isn't easily accessible. A couple of them will show up on eBay every month and they tend to go for less than $60 just about every time (I know because I've been outbid on every EH-2 in the past month). So the BBE pedal is readily available for about $99. I'm sure you guys probably lean towards the EH-2 as well, but if anyone out there who could shed some light on the EH-2 vs. the BBE Sonic Stomp -- please do!
Thanks! ~Ed |
