Hi everybody I like to play some old bluesrock by The Doors, SRV, Cream, ZZ Top, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, George Thoroughgood etc. I wanna buy a decent overdrive for blues. The 3 i have in mind are the SD-1, OD-3 and BD-2. If anybody owns one of these pedals, please let me know how they sound like and if their good for blues. Thanks |

Hi Joske Turbo
Welcome to the forum from Australia.
You list many bands, that did many songs. You will probably need to get a combination of different dirt pedals to cove that broad a sonic range. Unless you have a more specific sound in your head.
All of the pedals you list are great, perhaps you will need to include the classic old DS-1 as well.
Or perhaps look at getting a dual tone pedal, like the SD-2. The SD-2 is highly regarded by many of the forum members here.
I suggest you go & spend some lots of time testing-trying out the different pedals, either at a friendly music store, or another musician friend.
Consider getting something like a GE-7 graphic EQ as well, it will allow you to get many more tones from the pedals you get.
You didn't tell us what kind-type of amp you have, or are going to run the pedals into. Some pedals sound very different running into Solid State (SS), or Tube/Valve amps.
In fact if you have a tube amp, you can use the GE-7 as a booster & EQ, to push the font end of a tube amp into blissful overdrive.
Good luck - & welcome to the reason so many of us, have so many different Dirt pedals...
Regards Dr. Bob  |

Hi Dr. Bob I already have a DS-1, so that problem is solved. My amp is a solid state Marshall MG100DFX. I also have a Big Muff but that sound is way to fuzzy for blues. Thanks for your reply and greetings from Belgium! |

Some of your influences uses a smooth overdrive sound, I found a close blues sound (not exactly) with a combination of my BD-2(modded) and CS-3(modded) and with soloing use DS-1 and GE-7.
Guitar---->CS-3--------->BD-2----------->DS-1----> SS Amp Input.
GE-7------------> FX Loop SS Amp input.
The trick is combine effect pedal until you find the sound that you are seeking for!! |

Hurray for Belgium!
I love your beers! Best in the world IMHO.
Welcome to the forum from the states.
I can't speak for the sound of a BD-2 but I would go for an OD-3 over a SD-1. If you have the chance, check out the DN-2. There are a few of us (myself included) that really like this pedal. But it has gotten some bad reviews as well. So as with any pedal try before you buy unless you collect, then buy buy buy. |

IMO you're putting the cart before the horse. If you're following in the footsteps of the blues players you mentioned, first you need to invest in a decent, if not good, tube amp. All the pedals in the world can get you in the bleachers, but if you want to at least get in the ballpark, get a tube amp.
That said, I cast my "pedal vote" for a BD-2(Keeley modded is better...more rich bottom end) or an OD-3. The SD-2 mentioned earlier is also a good choice(it features two "channels") although IMO it lacks a little bottom end. |

| An MIJ SD-1 is IMHO the best blues pedal. Definitelt check these all out before you buy as we all have different ears and tastes. Your ear and your taste are what is important. |

I'd agree with that. A MIJ SD-1 into a tube amp sounds great for blues. So does a cleaned up MIJ DS-1, if want it a little dirtier. But yeah, try some stuff out, and see what sounds best for you. |

Thanks everybody for the responses, but I think I will not buy one of the pedals I mensioned earlier. I will propably buy a FDR-1. Great rockin' fender sound, plus reverb and vibrato! Anyway, I will also check out the others before buying;

FDR-1 is OK, but as a versatile overdrive for blues I wouldt buy it, both OD-3 and BD-2 are much better, in my opinion. I know as I have them all. FDR-1 has reverb, yes, but I would say its mediocre one, it works but almost any onboard reverb is much better. There is a digital grit on FDR-1s reverb, you have to keep the reverb-volume really low. The vibrato is quite good but very hard to change tempo on. All in all, my advice is to skip FDR-1 and go for OD-3 and if you need reverb buy a used RV-2,3 or 5.

One more advice... Go to the music shop, try every pedal that you wish, compare (by ear) , go to another store, and repeat all process.. If you can, try to do this with your guitar and amp, so you need to carry with this on every pedal evaluation...This is the method that I suggest....
After all evaluations, take your decision and fight to buy the best pedal ( or combination of pedals)that you heard.If you dont have enough money, be patient, and wait for the moment that you can buy it...
In my experience, A long time ago, when I was young, I spend money on cheap pedals, because were tested with guitars and amps better than my gear, and when I use on my own equipment it sound awful... In other ocassions lack of money was an excuse, but I`d neven been happy with this attitude ....
Now, I never buy something if Im not full satisfied...
Thats my opinion |
