I've been thinking of trying to play my guitar with a bow but I'm not sure if I should get a chello or violin bow. Does anybody know what Jimmy Page uses? Any suggestions would be helpful as I've never really heard anything besides a short clip on youtube. Has anybody tried it? Thanks

I've tried it a bit and know some people who had guitar set up especially for it..

-a narrow-waisted guitar will give the best results (les paul is ideal for this, also for the string height off the body @ the bridge - but I believe Page also did this with a tele.)

-flatwound strings will give the most violin-like sound, and preserve the life of your bow (find a pressurewound or something as a middleground), AND won't pick up too much rosin (which makes the strings sticky)

-a cello bow might be too long.. look at a viola or violin bow - but get what's comfortable for you. Don't buy an expensive one as you might ruin it (the horsehair, anyway).

-good luck and have fun!

Wow, thank you. I was already thinking about what would happen with the rosin and if the strings would be too rough and break the bow. Flatwound, I've never used them but I'll buy a set.

I'll be using my telecaster, so I'll just raise the strings as high as they go in a curved shape.

I doubt the music store would let me test a bow with a guitar so I'll just buy the violin bow, it's only $30. Thanks again.

Good luck DarrinPA!

That sounds awesome. Let us know how it works out; we all may be buying one.

I played with a bow when I was young, after seeing Jimmy Page playing it with the New Yardbirds. But it was really hard to get something nice out of it.
An E-bow is a much better alternative, but a real bow sure looks cool…
