I just bought the DD7 and am curious as to why it defaults to ON when I turn on my pedalboard. It is the only Boss pedal to do that. Is there any way to change that, as having it default to ON is not desirable? Thanks.

Hi kimm and welcome!

I believe that's the way it is programmed - it is a heavily digital device and does not use a flip-flop like many other Boss pedals.

The DD-7 is certainly not the only one. Some of the older pedals you can indeed switch their initial mode by a little soldering mod but with a highly digital pedal like Laurie said i doubt it would be that easy if at all possible.

Why would they choose to program it to default ON? That does not seem very practical for the working musician.

Dunno... my DD-20 and CE-20 (also very digital) are the same. Guess it had to be one or the other

I have notice that some pedals default to on when battery powered, but do not when powered by a adapter or daisy chain. At one time I had a total of 15 ( out of 56 ) that defaulted to on when powered by Power supply and daisy chain.

All the pedals that use a flip-flop to control the FET switching have the potential to default to either ON or OFF. And can be modded to be one or the other...

The pedals with microprocessor control (DD-7, DD-20, CE-20, others) have the initial ON or OFF state determined by the software, and unless there is a parameter in the pedal to change, it is not moddable.

Is there an advantage for the musician or a logical reason why Boss would program them to default to ON?

I'm sure that in a back-room somewhere in Japan there is someone with an excellent reason for this

My guess would be that when you do the power-up you can see the pedal is working because the LED comes on.

The only thing I can think of is a controller like the SCC-700 that might engage effects by powering them on. I thought a couple Boss effects incorporate a lag during power-on (DD-7?) that wouldn't be conducive to seamless control, whatever.. just an idea.
