I am looking for a noise gate.
Is the MXR Smart Gate any good?

Or would I do better with an NS2?

I don't know the MXR pedal, but the NS-2 isn't really a noise gate as such.

The NS-2 "Noise Suppressor" attempts to intelligently remove noise which is not produced by your guitar (ie hum from high gain distortion pedals etc). This means that (in theory) you can still make use of quiet playing with noisy pedals - any sound no matter how quiet that is made by your guitar should be left uneffected. A noise gate such as the NF-1 cuts ANY noise below a certain threshold - thus muting any quiet playing.

The NS-2 and NF-1 are both great pedals, whether or not I'd recommend either depends on what you're intending to use them for...

I've got all three... MXR M-135, NS-2 and NF-1. Actually I have two NF-1's - one for each leg of the stereo chain.

For some reason, when I HAVE to have something like that in the chain, I always end up with the NF-1 sitting right near the end of the chain doing it's thing for the entire chain. There's just something about it's simplicity and "analoggy-ness". I'm aware that many people just don't like the NF-1, but it works for me. Did you know the SG-1 and NF-1 are variations of the same circuit?

What is the actual application you would be using it for?

The thing which i dislike about the NS-2 is the Send/return. It's a clever circuit, but I can never get a patch lead long enough! My Md-2 is under control by it but I wont be able to put any future dirt boxes through it.

& Laurie, does the NF-1 affect delays and modulation badly? I was thinking of putting a noise gate on the end of my chain just to clean but overall tone up.

Ollie, you should put the NS-2 at the end of the chain or just before any delay pedals, as the NS-2 does cut some repeats off. This way the noise from the MD-2 will still be suppressed along with any other pedals up to the NS-2. This way uses just the input/output jacks not the send/return and you won't need any longer patch cables.

I did that & it fixed my cs-3 od-3 nicely but I swear the md-2 is the noisest pedal ever, I went back to the Send/Return because the MD2 needed to the threshold a lot closer to 8 oclock than the others.

I don't know about the MXR, but I prefer the NS-2...if its good enough for Yngwie, its good enough for me...though thats the only time I use Yngwie to make life decisions, otherwise I'd be wearing spandex and a ruffled/pleated pirate shirt while getting ready to pull a gun out on someone right now

Last time I saw you play that huge stadium gig.
Isn't that what you were wearing?
While trying to convince me it wasn't really you...

Yeah you're right..... It's not a look that goes well with all your Telecasters...

I'll second that... actually I think there are quite a lot of things that only Prince can get away with (while doing it with style to boot).
