Everybody say MT-2 is the most famous pedal among Boss drive pedals, leave me your opinion of using this pedal, thanks a lot...
In fact, I cannot figure out what are the differents between different distortion pedals of different brands. for example, Vox Bulldog Distortion with the NT-2, the MXR Distortion pedal with the MT-2, etc... |

Not sure if it's the most famous pedal or not but Boss claims it's their best seller. I would say the DS-1 and SD-1 have a strong claim to fame as well. After all they've been in production longer than the MT-2.
There are numerous differences between most distortion and overdrive pedals but there are also notable similarities. A lot of pedals (including the MT-2) produce their distortion by clipping the signal with a pair of diodes. A diode starts conducting when the signal above it reaches around 0.6V-0.7V. If you feed in a signal with amplitude around 1V, the top of the signal will be cut off when the signal raises above 0.7V. Two pedals using the same method of producing distortion may however not sound alike. Different diodes will produce a different sound but there are also lots of other components in the signal path that will shape the sound. Most pedals are using one or more opamps (operational amplifiers). These are integrated circuts with lots of components inside and they all sound different.
The Vox pedal you mention has a valve (tube) running fairly cold inside it. Not sure how the distortion is produced but t is likely that the priniciple is different. The MXR is using the diode clipping method but it sounds very different from the MT-2. It is more similar to a DS-1. You will have to test them out for yourself to find out which one you prefer. |

The Boss MT-2 is probably one of the few relatively cheap pedals which can produce a lot of sounds. Usually pedals which can do what the MT-2 does can be found in the boutique pedal range, and they are far more expansive.
So overal MT-2= A lot of sounds for relatively little money!! [But you do need to tweak a lot, and the knobs are not all that big, so think about this when you would like to use this on stage!!!] |
