Hi SirJackdeFuzz
What a cool looking set of mods.

What do all the swith mods do?
Did you do them yourself?
If you did the mods, would you be kind enough to share them with us?

I just won a faulty SD-1 on ebay (it's now working) this is my first SD-1.
I like the assymetrical clipping of this unit, & have just started to use it.
I do have a couple of of OD-2's, I like those as well, but depending on the mood that I'm in.

Hahaha . .

. . . no, i did not do it myself. Although i am very steady with a soldering iron, i know nothing about electrical stuff !

A small up-and-comming Brittish (boutique ?) co. made it for me !
In fact, it is soo small, it is still just a one man project at this time !
He tired to make it to my spec's, but i was very vague with my description of tone !

In a nut-shell, this is what i told him . . .

. . . "give me a primative garge-blues/rock tone, with a slight clipping in the tone, as the chrord rings out. But I do not want the clipping all the prominent with lead parts !"

What he came up with is not all that new, BUT putting three diff. mods in one box was just short of a mirracle, if you ask me !

The 3 toggles activate the following :

* Fulltone Full drive mod.
* Keeley 5Star mod.
* Spider mod. - this being his own take on my request.

what really make this pedal a versatile-beast, is the fact that he "socket'ed" both the DIODES & the OP-AMP chips, so i have 4 of each to play around with !
Now, i can go from LM833 tot LM308, (ala true 70's RAT), to JCR4558DD, and 207, and what ever one i want to drop into the socket !
He also combined (by solderring the together) some DIODES to create unique custom sounds !

If truth be known, there is such a small diff. in over-all tone diff. between the Keeley & Fulltone mod, that within a band context, with 2 guitarist, you will not notice when i go from keeley to Fulltone . . . at least i know i will not be able to tell, if some opne play'd my rig and did it !

SirJackdeFuzz
Thanks for informing us,

It's still a nice looking mod.
Now I wonder if you might have started something?

How many switches & mods can anyone put into a Boss pedal.

I can see it now my SD-1 is better than your SD-1, it has 2 more switches.
No my DS-1 is better than your SD-1 it has 5 more switches.

And maybe, someone will just fit non working switches to their pedals
to keep up with the Jones's & to look COOL-er on stage.

And finally, the the COOL-est of all guys, who can boast, that all his Boss pedals have at least 4 switches

Dr. Bob, have you seen this guy? Not that I would want a DS-1 w/ a 12AX7 in it, but he gets serious props for pulling it off!

Too many switches and options for me. I'm not a fan of Tubes in pedals, but to each his own.

Nice find Diggum12,
The guy has some really serious mods,
The 12AX7 seems just a little too big mechanically for these kind of mods.
I wonder if he has heard of Nuvista valves like the 6CW4 Triode
Although he might need two of them, as the 12AX7 is a Dual Triode.

Data sheet
http://www.drtube.com/tubedata.htm (near the bottom of the page)

Pic of a Nuvista 6CW4
http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0274.htm

For those of you who have never heard of or seen a Nuvista valve, they are miniature valves, that are small enough to fit into a thimble, are metal covered, so you can't see the glass envelope of the valve,
These types of valves are know as hardened valves, because they are less prone to damage.

Similar type valves are used in some valve microphones & HIFI amplifiers. they are about 3/4 of an inch long & about 3/8th of an inch in diameter.

I know I'm getting off topic, but it's good to learn something new everyday.

so why don't they cover all glass tubes with metal for added protection or does the heat become an issue then?

controlfreak, I would imagine you are correct, but I would also imagine cost would also be another factor.

I know that, it is near impossible for a mere mortal to remove a 6L6 output valve, without resorting to a folded over cloth (amp turned off of course).

I know that you can remove a hot 12AX7 though.

You could argue that the valve shields on some of the smaller valves, are in effect putting a metal cover on them.

But if all valves had metal covers, would we then have terms like, Warm - Glowing - Ruby - Bottle etc, to describe the sound of valve amps & valve amps in general?

Its funny that the topic of tubes in pedal just got brought up, because I stumbled upon this article on Howard Davis' website regarding the subject. (Howard Davis was one of the engineers at Electro Harmonix in the 70s.) Check it out: http://howard.davis2.home.att.net/Tubesvs.SolidState.htm

Yes, I was always of the same persuasion. Like, "just because you can doesn't mean you should." Why would anyone put a tube in a pedal? It's gimmicky, and you usually have to use a separate power supply/wall wart.

I tried an Ibanez Tube King, that VOX joke of a pedal with all the amp modelers, and the worst of all: The Radial ToneBones which are WAY overrated. Sure, they sound like a Marshall, but so does a handful of pedals less than $100!

Still, my desert island pedal is a BD-2 (modded of course )

It used to be my DD-3, but I've got to have overdrive to survive.

Good one Gurran1928:
It seems that you have officially named the disease-affliction that we are all suffering from.
