So I received an 84 PH-1R today with a fair bit of chipping, only it looks to me like it has an orange undercoat, as if they took a DS-1 enclosure and repainted it green then throw a PH-1R circuit in there. Just checked under the pedal and there's all this orange paint along the trim. Will post photo's when it's light...
Anyone else ever seen anything like this? |

you mean someone took a ds-1 case, rehoused a ph-1r pcb and painted it green, or the undercoat is orange? Can you see 'Distortion DS-1' under the 'Phaser PH-1R' wording? Same for the upper half tone/level/dist vs rate/res/depth |

| I mean it looks like one day at the Boss factory they ran out of unpainted enclosures so they took a some enclosures that had already been painted DS-1 orange and re-painted them green for the PH-1Rs they were making that day. At first I thought it was oxide (rust), only aluminium doesn't rust orange and on the bottom skirting of the pedal it's very clear it's an undercoat of paint. Interestingly the battery door doesn't have the orange paint underneath. |

Someone reported another one earlier too but I can't find the thread right now. Looks like there may be a few out there with two layers of paint. |

It could be a coating of etch primer.
The cases are made from die cast aluminum alloy, and you either have to key the surface, or use etch primer, to make the paint stick.
Although all the etch primers that I have bought & used, are a kind of sickly yellow.

| Perhaps they just primer coated with whatever was the cheapest and most available at the time, either yellow or orange perhaps? |

It very well could be primer, but it's orange, and I've been around a few trashed Boss pedals and never noticed an orange undercoat before. Anyway, here're the promised pics -

Probably had overstock of painted chassis, ran short on comps, so converted the chassises to PH-1r
Any other pedals with different paintjobs underneath? Other than slow gear (od1), and phaser(r)(ds-1) |

| What's the serial of your PH-1r? Would be interesting to have a closer look at others from the same month to see if this is widespread. |
