Hi! I have Boss DS-1 & DS-2(both Taiwan). I like DS-1, but there is a couple of disadvantages (Low(bass) cut, low output). DS-2 has good midrange & low(bass), but i think DS-2 is deaf, not so live like DS-1. Now i want try DS-1 Japan 'cause
quote: Many people swear that the older Japan made pedals sounds better than the newer ones made in Taiwan.
What can you tell me compare a DS-1 Taiwan & DS-1 Japan? What the difference in sound? Or what mode can you recommend? Or what pedal you can recommend me (i didn't like Metal Zone). I need a heavy distortion (for punk-rock/grunge/riot). Thank You... |

| There are many mods that can be done to improve the DS-1 output and bass. Do a google search and buy an upgrade kit or do it yourself. There's a lot of info on this very site about such matters. If you're looking for a heavier pedal try the ML-2. There's no accounting for taste, but I love it. It's (IMHO) much better than the Metal Zone. |

To strat714 Thank You! I want to know sound has DS-1 Japan & i know about AnalogMan mod, Keeley mod, but i don't know their sound; I heard like somebody said that the Keeley mod not so aggresive (more for blues rock, classic rock), that's why i asked! Ohh, buy the way, i'm playing guitar with hot humbucker! |

| Keeley seeing eye/ultra will probably give you what you want. Keeley have published this mod on their web site and I've done it for a bunch of friends who all love it. |

I personally dig stock MIJ DS-1's.
They sound worlds different from a current MIT one and probably would give the sound you are looking for.
the Keeley SEM gives it more of an overdriven to the max tube sound... think EVH's tone on Van Halen I and II. it has a lot of clarity though and is definitely less sludgy.
pedals from boss i would recommend trying for the sounds you are describing: DS-1 MIJ stock. SD-2 stock. HM-2 MIJ stock (this one is a bit noisy). OS-2 stock. OD-2 MIJ... probably won't have enough vol boost but the tone will probably be in the vain you are looking for.
These are all in that moderate distortion/heavy overdrive type of tweener gain. |

As a note...
yah, your DS-2 will be too gritty/brittle and not organic enough unless you are going through a really crunchy amp (think natural valve compression) with speakers that have lots of headroom.
most of the mods for the DS-1 are designed to either clean it up (remove fuzz/fizz), boost volume, and make it more tube sounding... which basically turns it into an overdrive pedal and less of a dirt box.
MT-2, ML-2, MD-2, PW-2, etc. will likely have too much dirt/sludge. |

I didn't like OS-2 when listen. I think about: DS-1 MIJ, DF-2 or one of DS-1 mods. How about DF-2? |

have you played an OS-2 or just heard demos?
it's probably boss's most versatile distortion pedal. most demos set the blend knob at the extremes and then in the center. i've found the magical value for that pedal has that knob somewhere around 10:45 or 1:45 depending upon if you want more fizz or more OD. it retains a somewhat organic nature even with a bit more dirt potential than a DS-1.
not sure why you would want a DF-2... the distortion is similar to a DS-1 MIJ but a bit thinner, but they're so inflated in value due to the feedback capability... unless you really feel you need that there isn't much of a point.
i've never heard a DS-1 mod that really pushes it into the realm you are looking for. the op amp difference between the MIT versions and the MIJ version is just too different.

| i'm played OS-2! I think OS-2 sound like metal distortion (on distortion position). Ok, i decide that i want DS-1 ('cause i like his sound) but Japan or maybe some mod. I listen Keeley mod & i think it's not bad. But i want hear opinions about DS-1 modification from people who have they. |

| I've owned and played stock MIT, Keeley Ultra, and Monte Allums Recto mod DS-1's. Of the three, I like the Recto Mod the best. Like the Keeley, it's EQ is better than stock, but I liked the feel and dynamics of the Recto better. It's a great pedal and an easy mod. |

Thanks, i saw this! Yes, Keeley mod is much more bass & good in midrange but don't you think that Keeley mod is not so powerfull distortion? I don't listen DS-1 lively, but in other videos it is other distortion attack. |
