I recently had new humbuckers installed with coil splits on one of my guitars. Split, the pickups sound great and really do give a nice single sound. However, they lack the "bite" of my tele.
I was reading about the PQ-4 and how it can be used to "get a variety of sounds comparable to using . . . different types of pickups." One of the settings listed is for turning strat-type sounds into a telecaster-type sounds.
My question for you folks is how well does the PQ-4 do at this? If I'm starting with a decent single-coil sound from split 'buckers, can I shape that into a pretty good approximation of a Tele? I play in a weekly jam where bringing multiple guitars just isn't practical. I'd really like it if one guitar can pull double duty.
Please give me an excuse to pick up one of these pedals and add it to my board: "But honey, the guys at the BossArea Forums said it will make my Jagmaster sound like a Tele. I had to buy it!" |

| Thanks for the link jack. I did a little research on that pedal and it sounds like it will fit the bill perfectly for me. I found a blemished one at a good price, probably much cheaper than what a PQ-4 would cost me. If I don't like it, I'll send it back. |

No problem!
So how many Teles does Tele_Man have? Just wondering, I am addicted to them as I bought 3 last year, and should have a 4th arriving some time this week... |

Just one Tele (for now . . . ), but at the time I registered it was my #1. It was just eclipsed by a modded up Jagmaster. The new 'buckers in the Jagmaster sound great both full coil and split. But as I mentioned, I'm missing a certain something of that tele quality that I just can't do without.
By the way, the PQ-4 I've been watching on eBay is up to $200 with 4 hours to go. I think the EHX pedal at $56 is money better spent. Thanks again for the link. |

Follow up question to my original post:
If I'm using a PQ-4 (or similar type of pedal) to shape the tone of my guitar to sound like different pickups (i.e. 'buckers to single coil) should it go at the front of the chain? Where does a parametric EQ normally go? What are the tonal differences between placing it before or after gain pedals? |

I use my PQ-4 as a sort of active tone control for my guitars (which have passive pickups), to get that 'single-coil neck pickup with the tone knob rolled down' sound for leads at the touch of a switch.
because of that, my PQ-4 is usually at the front of my chain, before my SD-1. however, I've heard that some people had great results from using it in the effects loop of their amp....
