Hi guys
I recently got givin an electronic organ that has an out put and was wondering if i could plug my boss distortion and delay pedals to experiment with sounds. Will this affect my organ? I would also need a speaker and on the label for the organ it says it is 120 watts. Could I use a normal cabinet like orange, Fender or Marshall without the guitar amp?
Thanks

Don't plug your pedals into the speaker out jack as this will likely damage the pedals. You need to put the effects before the amplifier section of the organ. You can use a guitar cab as long as it is rated 120 watts, which is a pretty large cab. I believe a home stereo speaker is what your looking for, but I am only guessing because you haven't given much info about this organ to go on. What make and model is it? What output jacks are on it and what type are they? If it has RCA connectors then its home stereo type speaker for sure. |

Thanks PV
Its a early 1960 Lowrey organ TLOR-1 Model serial 643264.
I took the urge and tried it and pluged it into my AUx in on guitar amp and it worked. My pedals are still fine so it couldn't have done much damaged. It made a perfect sound grunge continues note for a good backing for guitar solo. |

Guitarpedals will work with ANY instrument, even microphones.
All you need is a line-out from your instrument, plug into bosspedal, and connect the lot to an amp [mixer, PA system ect.]
In the case of your organ, it helps if you have a line-out.
If you listen to the 60s bands and how their organs sound [Steppen Wolf and a host of others], well you can get that sound with a distortion-pedal. Works very well, and can change the organ sound to almost a guitar or sax. In case of Steppen Wolf [and Deep Purple] there are times when it is hard to tell where is the guitar and where is the organ, because both instruments go for a similar sound.
Experiment and enjoy |

| +1 on pedals4pv's advice.. keep speaker-level output away from Boss pedals! They can take line-level just fine, but you may let the magic smoke out if you use speaker levels into them. |

That's a trick question!
If I answer I have experience, then by implication I am admitting I have burned up a Boss pedal by the very action by which we are describing.
If I answer I have no experience, then you & others will surmise that DeFrag's credibility has fallen from grace..
You see my dilemma
Sometimes I just use common sense. I'm quite certain that the Boss pedals I have tested with line levels performed without compromise. I DO NOT however condone the use of speaker-level inputs with Boss pedals based on the fact that Ohms Law dictates that Current * Voltage = Watts & solving for Current with a 100W (peak) amplifier output & assuming about 30V gives us around 3A of current. Remembering that current equates roughly to power, that seems a bit much to push through devices such as Boss pedals which are primarily designed for low level signals produced by a guitar.
Hence, I cannot recommend the use of the aforementioned pedals with speaker-level signals. |

According to Michael Monarch, Steppenwolfs original guitarist from an interview in Wolf Marshall's guitar one magazine, oct 97 issue:
"They (the producers) wanted a raw sound like what we did live. When I say raw, I mean it-we even distorted the organ by playing it into an amp!"
I had to dig that one up from under a pile of magazines |

There was a series a while back on TV called 'classic albums'where they brought famous bands back into the studio to show how the recorded some of their most famous albums, and one of the bands was deep purple...i remember noticing that jon lord was playing his keyboard into an old marshall combo and it had a lovely warm distorted sound..... ..... |

I love effects with keyboards. I have an old cp-60m electric/acoustic upright yamaha that I run through a 16 second delay, boss dc-2, and (soon to be) vb-2 .
The only thing I have ever heard about keyboards hurting pedals is that new electronic keyboards (I have a p90) can hurt or overload old, vintage pedals such as maybe a vb-2 or even the dc-2. However, this can be fixed with some kind of direct box passive/active setup...and the new boss pedals and most pedals now are fine!

Yeah I was looking for a deep purple sound like in Perfect Stranges. I was also looking for a band called Wolfmother, A big hit in australia, organ sound. Here's a vid to show you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytG3SsotxJ4

Yeah the first thing I did with our new KB player (with very cheesey rhodes and organ sounds) was to intoduce him to a modded SD-1 (for both).
I also suggested to get himself A Maxxon AF-9 and a rotosphere (which has a KB setting) but I think he ran out of money ;-) He did get a wha into his rig tho.
At one point I just set up my gtr rig and let him play thru it.
Another kb player I played with used to use a modded/blackfaced Fender Princeton into his vintage rhodes. That was a sweet distorted sound.
Pick up any early Medeski Martin & Wood CD and you'll have all the answers you need. |
